I was able to playtest Exploding Kittens while on JoCo Cruise 2015, along with Matt Inman and Elan Lee, and about 900 other nerds.

Anyway, here are the basics of the rules that were in play at the end of the cruise (they changed a couple times over the course of the event based on playtesting feedback)

Exploding Kittens
2-4 players (up to 8 with two decks)

Setup: Ensure there is (player count - 1) Exploding Kitten cards in the deck. With 4 players, there should be 3 Exploding Kittens.

Provide each player with a Defuse card, and put the rest in the deck. Shuffle the deck and deal 4 additional cards to each player. If you are dealt an Exploding Kitten card, put it back in the deck (anywhere you want, hide the deck under the table if you want while placing the card). You do not get to draw an additional card to replace it.

Pick a start player... ((There were several methods named on the cruise, but probably none of them will be final))

Play: On your turn, play zero or more cards to a central discard pile, then draw one card to end your turn.

Action cards do what they say...

"See the Future" lets you look at, but not modify the order of, the next three cards on the deck.

"Shuffle" lets you shuffle the cards, until everyone at the table agrees you've shuffled enough.

"Attack" lets you skip your draw phase, and the next player takes two full turns (including drawing two cards).

"Skip" just lets you skip your draw phase, and then play continues as normal.

There are also several different types of cats that don't have any action normally associated with them. Playing a pair of these will allow you to randomly take a card from an opponent's hand. Playing three of a kind will allow you to name a card and opponent, and if they have one of that kind, they have to give it to you (like Go Fish). Playing 4 of a kind ((Very rare, not sure anyone ever saw it happen)) lets you Go Fish, but the opponent has to give you ALL of the cards with that name that they have. ((Variants under consideration made a 4 of a kind do normal Go Fishing to all opponents, or look at an opponent's hand and take a card of your choice. Not sure how that ended up))

In response to any attack card or stealing, you can play a "Nope" card as an interrupt to block the attack. The attacker can counter with another Nope card to say "Yup". This can continue until everyone gives up and the attack proceeds or not.

If you draw an Exploding Kitten at the end of your turn, you're out of the game, unless you play a Defuse card. If you do, you can place the Exploding Kitten card back in the deck, anywhere you want (Again, under the table so nobody can see if you put it on top, on the bottom, 2 cards down to target a specific player, whatever)

The last person alive wins!

Addendum for 8 players... Unless something changes, the base game comes with 3 Exploding Kitten cards, so two decks come with 6, which is enough for 7 players... In an 8 player game, the first person to explode puts their Exploding Kitten card at the bottom of the deck, then play continues as normal. I spoke about this to Elan, and it's possible they'll include an extra Exploding Kitten card so this doesn't need to happen. No promises though!

(Other than 3 Exploding Kitten cards and 6 Defuse cards, I have no idea how many of each card there are in the deck... I never got around to counting them... sorry!)

Oh, so they added another Exploding Kitten card at the last minute, so the base game plays 2-5... which means that two decks will have 8 EK cards, so it will play up to 9 now!

That's good but it would be better if they simply placed the max number of exploding kittens in the deck and let us remove the extra card. That way, when combining two decks, we can play with a full 10 players. With four normal cards and a Defuse card in hand to play, there shouldn't be too much trouble playing.

They've also now added the artwork for the "Nope!" cards on their Facebook and Twitter pages.
