Another episode from the archives. If there is any mention of BGG.CON or Games International, this is inaccurate - this episode is from early 2005.

In this episode we speak with D.W. Tripp - a game store owner with a few opinions on the game industry.

Full Episode - 128 minutes

"think of the 'children'!" well, what lame-ass leaves those about for kids to be consuming in the first place!?! Have YOU no sense of decency or are you so "rich" that you can afford to "feed the starving children" WITH 'lead figurines'?

Is there a complete episode guide anywhere on BGG? I probably already have this one in my GeekSpeak archives on my hard drive but can't know without listening to each one! Anyway, an episode guide would be nice and all I've found are abandoned/incomplete Geeklists.

Awesome! The beloved classic geek speak style, game retailing discussion is always fascinating, and Trippy's witty style comes across better in audio then in writing.

Maybe not quite what you are looking for, but the list of available episodes and a short description of each is currently located here: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgamespeak.php

Perfect! So this means the recent episodes 'from the archives' were never actually released previously? I wondered how I had missed a DW Tripp episode!

I'd like to see or hear, cliff hanger endings, Boardgamespeak: The Lost episodes, TV Specials, Feature length films, satellite talk radio programs and Saturday morning animated spin offs. (DW Tripp, GROGnads and Mr Cranky and several other geeks as cartoon characters is a pretty funny thought).

Derwood spoke a lot of the difficulties in running game stores and Derk wondered why most employees don't even know what the BGG is. This place http://www.sixfeetundergames.com/ does it right. It's in Lancaster, PA and I visit everytime I go to a convention there. They've got computers linked right in to BGG so you can sit down and see what the lowdown is on a game you're looking at in the store. They have the BGG rating for a game posted right under it. The owners are gamers themselves and are very helpful and friendly. They have a HUGE collection of open games you can sit down and play in the store with lots of space and tables to play on. Oh yeah, DW, snacks! Lot's of snacks and pop machines. I buy something from them everytime I'm there and only wish there was a store like that in Cleveland. The closest we have is http://www.imgamestore.com/ located in a mall (Derwood's bane) with limited space to do all the things 6 Feet does. He also has a collection of games and tables to play them on but generally has to cater to the general public (LCR/Apples/etc) to make his rent. We run a board game night every monday to teach new games to anyone interested and it's tough going for the most part, a lot of lookers.

Great Episode!

Dagwood seems like a pretty likable guy - although he loses 1 point for not mentioning his (and my) favorite GW miniatures game

I especially liked the insight on running a game store - Aldie is right, it IS every gamer's secret dream to open one up, and hearing Derwood's advice about the many pitfalls and problems associated with being able to just survive much less be successful were very interesting.

It was kind of a bittersweet episode too. On one hand it was great getting a new one to listen to, but on the other, it was kinda sad knowing there aren't going to be any new ones - at least not like those original ones at any rate.

Derk is missed. He was Costello to Aldie's Abbott (and I mean that as a big compliment guys!).

Let's hear some more from the archives!

Thanks for the great episode. D.W. is entertaining to listen to and insightful about the world of running an FLGS.

It's one of the best of the series. What else remains in the archives of unpublished material for BGS?

It took me a little while to get into it, but then the interview turned a corner and really got interesting. Good stuff.

P.S. How many more of these never-been-heard episodes do you have stashed away?

Me too. Although I will say that the time period while Derk and Aldie were setting up and Derk was spilling wine on the equipment and we were trash-talking about wimmin' kept me entertained.

Anybody catched what was the name of the funny web site Derk (and the others) recommended? Axe of something...

Gosh! I feel like the bookstore customer looking for you know, this cool book I've heard of; somewhere. It has a blue cover. Damn it you should know it; you work here, don't you?

He's mentioned recently leaving the FLGS business. I wonder, did he retire, sold out for economic reasons or simply moved on to a different line of work?

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to you guys. Nice interview.

You watch 24 too....triangulate...sweet...that's my favorite TV show.

Dirwood Wolfgang

Did Derk and Aldie ever play Europe Engulfed together or not?

Will have to check out Boomtown again.

Yeah it's sad how closed and secret the Euro gaming market is as far as promotional material, sales numbers, etc. like you said DW.

I enjoyed the part where you mentioned you were acting like you play Yu-Gi-Oh to the 13,14 yr olds. It's true just tell the customer what they want to hear. Nothing wrong with that and like you mentioned I'm sure they'll eventually become a board gamer who knows.

I had no idea that the board game market doesn't let you return unsold product. I guess I shouldn't knock ebay like I do as it seems like for the honest sellers it's a viable alternative to find hard-to-find product. Great that you could liquidate product.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles pewters...wow never knew that existed. Just blows my mind how they'd sell even without a game behind it. I read up on that Kevin Eastman on wikipedia and it says he lost $14 million starting some business and his wife is a porno chick...weird guy.

Jeez, that's crazy. Does that mean they want you to pre-pay for the games you'll stock on the speculation you might be able to sell some of them at a profit? With that business model, I'm surprised any FLGS would want to stock more than one copy at a time of any game ever. This also explains the 'fire sale' pricing you see regularly on Amazon or Toys-r-Us.

A good show that is worth slogging through the slow portions. I often don't agree with DW but he was a great interview.

But, hey, I don't get the self-hating music taste. If yer afraid mentioning Clint Black or other country stars will make people think you are 'some kind of hick', then why listen? Don't be ashamed of your taste.

Even though I agree with Aldie, I'll take eighties music over country any day...

Great, great episode! As they all were...except that Reiner Knizia episode, shutter.

When Derk and Aldie stick to the topic of games and their periphery it is golden.

Pop culture? Nah'somuch.

I always like when Derk says, "I shouldn't go there.", when a guest sets him up with a come back. I wish his "shouldn't go there" indicator light functioned more often, but what can you do? These episodes are already in the can and we're lucky to have them at all. Black flys in the chardonnay et al.
