Greetings, Heroes.

How does terrain work in the expansion?
2 terrain tokens are drafted randomly at start of each battle.

However, some terrain tokens are included in majority of battles.
The simple cover terrain is one of these tokens.

When approached, the cover generates an advantage to all adjacent characters.

Characters in cover receive less damage when attacked from a distance. This includes party damage. Heroes may now reduce damage from exploding tomatoes, flying axes and various dragon breaths. They may just live a little bit longer.
Be wary though, some old and new enemies will often run for cover. In this case, approaching such enemies with melee characters may be considered a better option.

Despite this, ranged attackers are not left without a solution to the cover dilemma.

Being adjacent to high ground terrain negates all benefits provided to characters in cover. It may even give characters an advantage, when using specific abilities.

Things were looking better for the ranger, until the warrior busted in and flipped the table.

Ranged fell from his high ground and must now instead take advantage of newly formed cover. Until he flips the table again that is.

Some terrain tokens may be used by heroes, by activating maneuver ability. In this case the table has been flipped, which could also cause to push and damage enemies, if there were any adjacent. This presents the ranger with a fair melee attack option.

Finally let me tell you about this icon. It represents a secure position for the heroes and makes them more resistant to push effects.
This little effect is often appreciated by melee characters, who do not like to be moved away from their attackers.

You just learned more than 50% of the terrain rules. Although each battle will feature a randomly drafted terrain with specific abilities, described on the draft cards.

The expansion will feature several unlikely terrain pieces, bursting with theme and providing new tactical options to every battle. The terrain is designed as a subtle mechanic, melding perfectly into the abstract positioning nature of the game.

Please let me hear what you think about it so far.
With next preview I will present how terrain can be dangerous to heroes and how enemies can exploit it to their advantage.

Tables that can be flipped sounds just great! Now how about barrels that can be used as cover and can be rolled to hit things?

Hey this is not a half bad idea, especially if you can put a hero inside the barrel.

That would be awesome. I'm playing Divinity Original Sin at the moment (PC game I should probably state here ) and constantly sneaking around as a barrel or a bush in the game is one of my favorite things to do

Really excited about this new expansion. Can you tell me if you've looked into friendlier shipping options for Canadians in the upcoming Kickstarter campaign? Thanks

Will the base character cards be updated to have some terrain interactions? If all of the terrain related abilities (like the example shown) just go in the ability deck, it could get really iffy on if they actually show up that often.

That is not the case. Abilities and items may provide minor bonuses.
The effects built into terrain itself is what really matters.
Every hero can use terrain actions and every character is affected by by terrain effects.

We will actually add a barrel terrain to the game and carve a little 'Nick' name on the barrel surface to honor the originator.

Awesome

Is there any sort of terrain that trigger an attack ? A tiny monster in a cage that will help its savior or a dark altar ?

It seems that monsters are able to use cover and high grounds. Can they use activated abilities of terrain like table flipping ?

Indeed, they can, and Tom will cover this in the next preview.

I will only hint onto the little skull icon on the terrain token. It's so vicious it must have something to do with it.
