Thanks for running it. I agree with you it would be nice to all meet in one place. Thursday evening is open but some may not be in town yet. If not Thursday then I suggest Friday before the poker tournament, say 7:00. We could meet in the back game room.

How about getting some publicity for this. I don't think adding it to the FAQ is enough because most people have already looked at the FAQ. I'd say we should either get this thread pinned or start a thread in the general forum pointing to this thread.

Sounds like a plan. Is that just a "Aldie, please pin this?" If things heat up enough, it should show on the front page.

It's probably also worth adding to the FAQ.

I'm not sure how to get something pinned. I guess a message to Aldie or one of the other admins is a good place to start. I was going to suggest starting a thread in the "General Gaming" forum because that's where most people look, but I seem to remember that they don't want math trade threads in that forum.

I am attending BGG.Con, live in the dallas area, and am interested in participating in a trade. But I have no idea what a "math trade" is, or how it works. Is there a thread somewhere explaining it?

Hi, Ryan.

The short story is that a Math Trade consists of an algorithm to let a bunch of people know how to trade games among each other: Alice would send a game to Bob, Bob would send to Eve, and Eve would send to Alice. Everybody gives and gets an equal number of games, but people aren't trading directly with each other. Make sense?

At the top of this thread, I've linked to the Awesome Lindsey Explains It All About Math Trades, which goes into more detail.

The practical upshot is that you can post your game offerings up on the two GeekLists, and once the lists are closed, you'll have a chance to post your wants.

Ah. The link to the explanation is in the geeklist, and i missed it. It makes sense now. I was mostly wondering about the wants part. "Math Trade" made me think it was going to be based on site rankings and such, which just seemed like a lottery type system.

I guess it's time to start digging through my closet.

So....can we all stand in a big circle and do a huge simultaneous pass-to-the-left? That may get tricky for those of us offering more than one item, but I will have mastered bilocation by then.

Is there anyone participating in the trade that won't be there Friday evening? I suspect most people will be but if there are some stragglers maybe we could handle that on a case by case basis. I think Friday evening is a good time to meet up and conduct the "handoffs".

Not if I win it first

I suggest we meet up at 7:00 in the back game room, the poker tournament starts at 8:00.

Lindsey, you are quite awesome. Thank you very much for your article!

Matthew, I would love to see a simultaneous "pass to the left" circle- I'm sure that someone has a video camera to capture it. Depending on how many longest trade chains turn up, this event is quite likely! You're a BGG Admin: Can we get this on the schedule?

Marshall, Friday evening sounds good for me- I will have already arrived! But we'll see what happens once the trade finder finishes.

That does sound like fun, but it'll only work as long as nobody has multiple games in the trade final chain, which is somewhat unlikely.

Marshall,

I'm going to stick with current tradition and include abbreviated game names with the geeklist numbers. The summary will look something like this:

1Tikal - Dan Manfredini
2ConqPangea - Dan Manfredini
3Genoa - Dan Manfredini
4Caylus - Seaborn
5HistWor - ManlyWan
6RailTyc - SybotCB

And so forth.

For wantlists:

23RoadsBoats 34BusenMemo 35Monopoly 36Yahtzee

Thus, user 23 would take games 34, 35, or 36 for theirs.

Does that make sense? Anyone see any huge holes in this plan?

I want to leave the list open overnight to catch the rest of the late-night stragglers and let the early birds squeak in a game or two if needed. I'll mark the list once I close it and post the summary for public consumption.

Once the summary's up, we'll allow folks to sweeten their offerings or make any needed changes. I'll then post a final summary and call for wantlists.

Good luck, everyone!

Since i'm a newb to these trades I just want to make sure I understand the wantlist format.

I am ssuming we post our game first, so the example 23RoadsBoats 34BusenMemo 35Monopoly 36Yahtzee

means user 23 posted Roads and Boats as their game to trade?

Thanks.

That's right. He owns the 23rd entry and is willing to trade it for any of the games listed thereafter, in order of preference.

Folks, both lists are now closed to new entries. I see that there are a few minor changes to make, so I'll take care of them. Feel free to let me know if there's something that needs to change before the summary is finalized and people start sending in their want lists.

Scott, just to back up B. Perry/the hooded one/Kayvon there, yes. Someone added Roads and Boats as the 23rd item and would take any one of the 34th, the 35th, or the 36th item. (Frankly, I'm a little suprised that the silly example hasn't produced any comment. Can't you imagine the poor schmuck with Roads and Boats wanting to trade for Yahtzee? Jeez, tough crowd.)

Okay, off to tweak the lists and produce the summary. I'll post it shortly.

Thanks for your patience, everyone!

Whew! If I had better regex-fu or (any) SQL-fu, that might've been faster. Thanks for everyone's patience!

Right now, everyone has about a half day to add sweeteners and make corrections. I'll repost the final list, including corrections tomorrow morning.

I'll need all final want lists by 10AM Monday morning CST. Please send me two messages: one with the subject "BGGCON MATH TRADE WANT LIST - BIG" and one "BGGCON MATH TRADE WANT LIST - SMALL." Feel free to submit your want list early. If you've already sent in your list, I'd appreciate it if you could re-send using the above format.

As moderator, I shall continue with tradition and post my own want lists in this thead.

I will to use Trade Genie for this Math Trade. As I understand it, that program has a limit of sixty games per want list, so be advised. I don't think that so many games were submitted that the program needs to run in parallel, so we are good on that front.

If you haven't participated in a Math Trade before, let us know if you have any questions or if this all makes sense. If you have participated in a Math Trade before, feel free to offer advice.

probably a silly question, but as this is my first math trade i must ask: in your example you show the numbers and title without hyphens, bit in the list they have hyphens separating them. do we need to include the hyphens in the want lists that we submit?

No, not that silly at all. I looked at a few other trades and they've started to adopt hyphens to enhance readability.

So yes, please do include hyphens with your want lists. It'd probably be best to just copy and paste from the summary, to make sure that Trade Genie doesn't get confused.
