Hello all,

I'm scoping out a project to begin building my own gaming table.

I was thinking about a speed cloth for a poker table or pool table. But maybe something more grippy, or less expensive would be better?

Something like a playing mat material might be really nice, but I wouldn't know where to find one that is some where in the ballpark size wise to do a whole table.

I'm curious what others have used and where they bought the material from.

It's been mentioned on previous threads but I followed through at http://www.hookloopoutlet.com/neoprene-sheets.html and bought a roll of neoprene. It's PERFECT! I ordered the nylon/mesh in 3mm thickness. I choose the mesh because the neoprene side has a light texture to it so it grips the tabletop very well and the black nylon fabric surface feels great. It came as a 50" x 80" piece which I easily cut with some sharp scissors. I cut one large piece for the dining table and have the other for a possible second table. I just roll it up and put it in the closet when it's not being used. It was just under $50 with shipping, I felt that was a good value for the use it gets.

nice, this looks like its the playing mat type of material I was looking for.

I'm guessing that this is what you got?
C. Nylon / Mesh Skin - One side is laminated with black Nylon jersey fabric, and the other side is a textured rubber skin.

Did you get black? or do you know if you can you get it in the colors they list at the bottom?

--EDIT--
nvm, I think I found my answer on how to get the colors.

A. Nylon / Nylon - Doublesided laminated Nylon jersey fabric.

allows you to get one side in black and one in a color.

If you have nylon on both faces, then the mat will want to slip around on a smooth table top. The textured rubber is non-slip.

I'll be adhering the mat to the table I'm building so the slipping won't be an issue.

I just finished my gaming table yesterday and got to try it out for a game. Though it hasn't been thoroughly tested I'd say the fabric worked really well. I used thin velvet/velveteen. I'm about to upload some images, so maybe I'll add them here later.

Your table looks great! Did you use any padding under the fabric? and did you order the velvet online or buy it locally?

+1 on the neoprene, especially for card games.

I picked up Velveteen at Hobby Lobby. I find the cards are less prone to humidity warp as they can breathe a little on the bottom due to the pile.
No padding on mine but again, the pile makes it very easy to pick up the cards.
right now I just table cloth it over a work desk that doubles as my hobby station but eventually I will mount it to a permanent table.

I believe that hookloopoutlet.com only offers the neoprene with a textured back in black. If you want a colored fabric with a textured back, you can deal with:
http://www.macrointlco.com/category.jhtm?cid=4
or
http://www.foamorder.com/neoprene.html

Macro Int. sells a sheet for around $50 plus $35 or so for shipping. Foamorder sells a sheet for around $75 plus shipping (not sure how much they charge for shipping).

I'm looking for some Canadians (in Alberta) who want to place an order for a few sheets to share the shipping costs. No luck so far.

Thanks!
I didn't use any padding.. I simply made a frame within the frame on which a piece of plywood could rest. I wrapped the plywood in burgundy velvet as you see in the picture.
As said by others it just makes it so much easier to pick up cards - and it's so soft I constantly want to stroke it

Edit: I bought the fabric online(Norwegian site). I was a little nervous about the feel of the fabric before I got it, but it turned out great. I bought both the burgundy and a casino green. I was planning on making the insert reversible, but it turned out it would only fit in the frame one way as the corners were slightly at an angle (1-2 degrees). Not really an issue when the table was finished - just more work to get there
