Paul Allen threw some of his billions to fund the discovery. I doubt he did much more than that.

From the story it appears he was an active participant.

Funny what one can accomplish with resources.

I guess if it was so easy, everyone would be finding battleships.

Not sure I'm getting the reason for the cynicism on this story. I think it's really cool Allen found this massive artifact from World War Two. This discovery doesn't happen without Allen's money.

Yes, it is a fascinating discovery. Always a target in Naval War. My cynicism stems from the headline of "Microsoft co-founder says he's discovered long-lost Japanese battleship". He didn't discover that ship any more than *he* won a Super Bowl. Deification of an individual when it took a team is cynicism defined.

Quite the opposite. Deification of an individual is a definition of blind faith.

Not sure exactly who would be more appropriate to give credit to in this case, the man mounting and financing the entire expedition or the tech that was running the camera on that particular shift. From the sounds of it Allen may have actually been aboard at the time they found it.

My guess is that Paul Allen never actually said to anyone "I found a battleship." It more likely a headline devised by some wonk at whatever media outlet is trying to get people to look at their news so they can earn more advertising revenue.

Agreed. People prefer stories of bootstrapped individual heroes to a team of professionals working collectively.

It's just shorthand, like when people say "Wellington defeated Napoleon at Waterloo". There were some other dudes involved.

It's also probably safe to say Wellington had more direct involvement in defeating Napoleon than Paul Allen did in finding the Musashi or winning the Super Bowl. Wellington defeating Napoleon is more like Belichick defeating Carroll. I could be wildly wrong, but Paul Allen probably just funded the minds and hands of the process yet seemingly getting the credit.

What has Paul Allen done to garner such ire? He's about as aloof as billionaires get.

Ire? Is Paul Allen a Sacred Cow in these parts? My only point was that spending some of his spare billions on this project doesn't mean he should get most of the credit. Is it really that incendiary a notion? It's not like I'm blaming him for choosing to pass from the one yard line or ripping off CP/M.

Personally speaking, I am extraordinarily thankful for Mr. Allen. For all he does chasing lost history; all he does to preserve WWII history. From the aircraft to the armor. The artillery to the ships. This man is a hero to WWII restorationists and preservationists.

Attempting to retrieve the HMS Hood's bell... what a noble thing to do. he does this because of respect for those who fought and died using that equipment, no matter which side they pledged allegiance to.

Keep it up Mr. Allen.

When I worked in Nagasaki, my office overlooked the dry dock where the Musashi was built.

They're still proud of that ship at the MHI shipyard.

Unless it's my wife suggesting "we" clean out the attic on the weekend. Then I do deserve all the credit.
