I'm looking for a game that plays under 45 minutes for those nights where we just don't have the energy for a long game. My primary concern is that it plays well with 2 people and that it isn't too text-heavy. If it plays well with more than 2, then that is icing on the cake. But it isn't a requirement. Any thoughts?

Sobek

All somewhat similar-feeling games about slowly accumulating cards for the right moment to cash them in for points. Sobek is the only one that can play more than 2. I think they're all fun and not too intense.

Tash-Kalar: Arena of Legends plays in 45 minutes and is great with 2 or 3, but requires a fair amount of focus. (And might be too much text? Depends what you call text-heavy.)

Mr. Jack Pocket is only 20 minutes but can be intense, depending on how you play it (and is another 2-player-only).

Machi Koro--our new go to 2 player (plays up to 5, but 2 seems perfect)
Carcassonne--Classic, and great strategic 2 player (obviously plays with more)
Dominion--2 to 4 player, but plays great with 2
Jambo--strictly 2 player, still come back to this occasionally
San Juan--strictly 2 player, also, one we come back to from time to time
Yardmaster Express--super fast and light
Rivals of Catan--our favorite, but a little heavier than the others.

I can relate. Here are several good choices, me and my wife enjoy playing, when it's end of day, not too much time or energy, but playing a board game is something we both want to do.

Enjoy!

When asking "What would Jesus do?", remember that flipping over tables and using a whip are within the realm of possibilities.

Battle Sheep - I was surprised at how much we like this game. You can get several games in within 45 minutes.

NOIR: Deductive Mystery Game is a fun little deduction game.

+1 Agricola: All Creatures Big and Small, but you'll likely want the expansions to add some variety. They're not needed at first, so you can get the base game and see if you like it first.
