I want to run some M44 demo rounds at a small con. What scenario would you recommend?

Cave ats:
1. Playable with the base game

2. Since the participants are most probably experienced gamers I would prefer to have Inf, Arm & Arty present, however not more than one non-standard troop type

3. Not too many different terrain types

4. Not too many scenario specific rules, therefore probably no beach scenario

5. ~Balanced

Edit: Numbered

At the Days of Wonder website, they have scenarios posted (both official and "from the front"). People have rated these scenarios, and recorded win-loss records. I would think a good convention scenario is one that is close to 50/50 on which side wins.

Yes, my No. 5 is one of the things I can get from the website, the other would be No.1?

But all others are harder to come by, so I tried to fall back on the hive mind of the M44 players.meeple

I know its not the most balanced scenario, but I have always found St. Mere Eglise a hoot, especially for guys seeing Memoir for the first time.

I'd run two scenarios... One beach and one inland.
(I agree with checking with the "scenarios from the front")

This will give a good representation of the game's capabilities.

I would get one with at least 5 cards per side (otherwise the chance of getting a 'bad' hand increases). I don't think you should blanket exclude beaches as there's really not too many specialized rules for that (no retreat onto ocean and move 2 on beach). I will think on this....

Hmm,
Montelimar (in the med., but no med. rules)
Operation Cobra (good, but Germans only have 4 cards)
[Normandy] Vaumicel Manor (might be too many specialized units though)
Sword Beach

OK, since this seems to be an unique specification I dug through the archives and found some.

Counter-attack at Arras, 45/55, all three branches, three terrains types, 4 command cards, special rules set.

Saverne Gap, 54/46, 3/2 branches, 4,5 TT, 4 CC, some minor special rules

Twin villages, 49/51, 2+1/3 branches, 2 TT, 4 CC,

All are three starred & basic set

I don't know about balance but what I call proper set piece battles straight from the basic game scenario book would be:

Operation Cobra
Operation Luttich
Toulon
Montelimar
St-Vith
Saverne Gap

I like Arracourt but it is very hand dependant for the Germans and the German left flank hardly gets going. If you pull a hand of left activation cards you've had it. If you pull Armoured assault and or Assault right flank you start very well.

Good luck and happy gaming

"Your results are back: it's negative"......um, is that a bad thing?

Here are some that I find really enjoyable:

1) Sainte-Mere-Eglise
Good for your requirements: Base Game & not too much terrain.
Bonus: Has the paratroopers, which is a fun little one time rule
Problem for your requirements: Does not use artillery, unbalanced

2) Sword Beach
Good: Base game. Infantry, Tanks and artillery present. Balanced (Axis win about 53% according to DoW's registry)
Bonus: Very thematic
Problem: Beach. Fair amount of terrain. Includes special infantry.

3) Saverne Gap
Good: Base game. Uses Infantry, armor, artillery. Balanced (Axis 53%)
Bonus: Really hammers home the sectional approach
Problem: None according to your criteria

4) Operation Cobra
Good: Base game. Balance (Allies 53%).
Bonus: ----
Problem: Includes elite tanks (simple, really), blasted hedgerows; I would avoid these for first timers

5) Counter Attack at Arras
Good: Can play with Base. Balance (axis 54%). Uses artillery, armor, infantry, basic terrain
Bonus: ----
Problem: Uses British nation rules

Based on what you are asking, Saverne Gap seems like a great choice. But if you want a second choice, and would be willing to concede the Beach---I love Sword beach for newbies.
