what exactly are they, and when/how would I need them? getting ready for our first game tomorrow night, and I going through the rules (revised edition) and the "rules summary" posted here I see mention of these..."pairs of ships"...but really no idea why they're needed??

You use the to distinguish between 2 ships of the same type (e.g. 2 green Dark Raiders). You place a marker under one of them, therefore the Dark Raider without a marker is no. 1 and the one with the marker is no. 2. You can thus track damage on the player board (also Population on other ship types).

It didn't make any sense to me either until I started playing, it's quickly obvious once you start playing and put your second ship on the map. Do yourself a favor and find another way to mark your second ships differently from the first. Use tape or a sharpie. The tokens are horrible to manage.

any ideas? I've ordered the stands, but won't have them before I play my first game (marking a stand should be easy)...instead of marking the actual ship, I guess i'll wait for the stands to arrive...
