We were interviewed by Peer Sylvester, a fellow BGGer who is also a game designer. He is one of the designers of Wir sind das Volk! The interview was conducted in english and Peer had taken the time to translate it to german. A big thank you to Peer for the time taken to conduct the interview with us.

Here is a translation of the interview at http://www.spielbar.com/wordpress/2015/03/11/15232 into English:

An Introduction to a Publisher: Starting Player

Peer Sylvester, 2015

Today we travel in our imagination to Starting Player in Singapore, where something special awaits us: A pure three-player game.
A pure, thematic three-player game. A pure, thematic, three-player game with Euro mechanisms. A ... oh, but read it for yourself!

Speilbar.com: Please briefly introduce yourselves and your publishing house to us.

Starting Player: We are a married couple from Singapore who enjoy playing board games in our spare time. We have played since
childhood and have since 2009 turned towards more complex games. In that year we discovered Boardgamegeek.

We were inspired by the broad spectrum of varying games on the market! We began to buy board games specifically on the basis
of reviews and commentaries on BGG - Agricola among others. It is our absolute favorite, even though we have already bought
hundreds of games in the meantime!

The many games led to discussions of strategy and game design. Through these we were pleased to design our own game, and that led
to the founding of Starting Player. We hope through our games to inspire more board gamers. Our mission is: Connect People
and Awaken Minds.

The number of authors and publishers in Singapore, or even in Asia generally, is clearly smaller than those in the USA or Europe.
Besides, we wanted to make games reflecting the feeling of life, the stories, and the culture of this region.

Our first board game, Three Kingdoms Redux, is based on the Three Kingdoms, an important epoch in China, and was published by us
on November 20, 2014.

Spielbar.com: Can you tell us more about your game?

Starting Player: The development process for Three Kingdoms Redux spanned about four years and contained over 200 test plays with
various test groups. Anyone who is interested in the development story can read about it here:

Three Kingdoms Redux plays out the triangular relationship among the states Wei, Wu and Shu. Each player takes over one of the three Lords:
Cao Cao leads Cao Wei, Sun Jian leads East Wu, and Liu Bei leads Shu Han. The starting position is asymmetric because Wei had the greatest
state power at the time. The weaker states Wu and Shu form an alliance at the start.

As feudal lords the players must manage their state and especially protect its borders from rebels and enemies from outside.
However, the power relations change constantly throughout the game and the players must seek to turn these fluctuations to their
advantage.

The game plays out over at most 12 rounds. Each state has 23 individual generals to choose from; each one has different attributes
(administration, battle, and leadership), one unique ability and a specialty army type.

The players use these generals to bid in the various action spaces. The highest bidder can take the respective action. With these
actions the players can develop their state, increase their military strength, increase their own popularity with the inhabitants,
improve relations with potential rebels or advance in rank. Whoever has the most victory points at the end is the winner.

We have described the concept behind a single game mechanism on Boardgamegeek:

The historical background:

https://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/159837/three-kingdoms...

The preparation of the artwork lasted roughly a whole year, since each of the 29 generals and each of the 42 enhancement cards has
its own artwork. Each general has his own story, and we produced a small booklet to tell these stories.

You can find more about the game on You Tube: (https://www.youtube.com/user/StartingPlayerVideo).

Spielbar.com: What are your plans for the future?

Starting Player: Our immediate objective is to build up a distribution network for Three Kindoms Redux (and future Starting Player games)
in the various regions, in which we can work together with local distributors and vendors. In that way we our game will hopefully
become more favorable in the corresponding regions.

In the long term we are planning more games, especially with an Asiatic background. We are working on individual ideas, but these must
be further developed and playtested. We hope to make our games in various genres to address the various types of gamer.

When we have finished a new game, we will announce it on BGG and our home page.

Spielbar.com: Where can we in Germany obtain your games?

Starting Player: We have a list of vendors who carry our games on our homepage:
http://www.startingplayer.com/games/where-to-buy

In Germany we know of Brave New World, Merlins Spiele-und-Verspieltes, Spieltraum and Terminal Entertainment.
Three Kingdoms Redux can also be obtained directly: http://starting-player.myshopify.com/

Spielbar.com: Will you be at Essen this year?

Starting Player: Unfortunately not. One of us works full-time and simply cannot leave the country in October. Besides, we are only
a small publisher with a small budget and have only a single game in our program. A trip from Singapore to Germany is also too
heavy for us... But we hope that one day we too can exhibit at Essen.

Spielbar.com: Many thanks for the interview!

I decided to make my own translation after using a translator which shall remain nameless. Its work included such gems as "exhibit at eating" [that's "Essen"], "kinky cathedrals" ["Kink doms"], and the "love triangle" ["triangular relationship"] among the three states. Mine is lacking in such humor, I hope, but probably a bit more exact.
