Hi all!

I'm fairly new to X-Wing with only a five or six games under my belt. I'm looking for a good, starting build that I can bring to competitive games - a build that could be considered effective against most other squads.

I've heard/read many good things surrounding the B-Wing and also Tie swarm builds, but would like to hear any and all comments from the community.

Thank you very much for any input and I hope everyone is having a good weekend. :)

Spend some time here on BGG with the X-Wings forums. There are large numbers of session reports and squad discussions under strategy. There are also links to video tournament reports. Far too much info out there to distill into one forum response.

By the way. What do you own? What have you experimented with flying so far?

BBBBZ will keep you competitive against most lists for fairly cheaply. You can also look up "fat han" and "fat chewie". I have found that finding ships you like is almost more important than finding what is "competitive". The tie swarm was very powerful for a long time and still can be but I am not a fan of the huge swarm as it always comes apart.

Many of the current winning lists are 2 ships Falcon and coran horn, or two YT's.

Keep up with the forums here, the articles and team covenant and pick a podcast you like. Good luck and "Fly Casual"

Thank you Les!

I currently own the core game - 1 X-Wing and 2 Ties. I have a Decimator on the way purely because I thought it looked cool :D

Besides the X and Ties, I've also played with a loaded up Han in the Falcon.

What would you suggest trying next?

That's very helpful, thanks Nate!

Just so I understand; what would BBBBZ and YT be? Also, would it just be the Strategy subforum I should keep up with?

I'll look up gordo Han and Chewie, and thank you for the input on the swarm; I know this game evolves rather quickly (which I love).

BBBBZ has omitted "-Wing" after each letter. It's the cheapest model of all those, going for pure cost-to-effectiveness ratio.

YTs are the Corellian freighters (1300 & 2400), in whatever combination suits you.

Everyone here is striving for that build. The only build that is better than that build is the one that is effective against all squads.

The squad you are looking for is always depending on your opposing squads. You can always build a hard counter to any squad. But there are, of course, squads that are more flexible/reliable than others. The difficult part is balancing fire power, hit points, pilot skill, maneuverability... and get all that within 100 points.

By the way, I didn't want to be condescending or anything in the intro, sorry if that came across the wrong way. Welcome to X-Wing.

Large Ships with turrets are almost always a solid choice since they are more forgiving to fly in the beginning. So a Decimator is a good choice. Pair that with a mini TIE swarm of 3-4 ships or an elite TIE Interceptor/Soontir (Phantoms often go with Decimators, but they are much more complicated to use effectively when you are just starting out).
Or take the old and proven combo of a Falcon + 2 small ships for Rebels.

Try one of the online squadbuilders to play around with upgrades etc.
The last link has some good info on squad archetypes and strategies for certain squads.

Well, you don't own very much yet so your options are limited. If you buy a Phantom to go with your Decimator, you can fly a fairly strong list. You'll need at least two more TIE fighters and perhaps more if you want to fly a real swarm (think 6-8 TIE's). However, you can fly a mini swarm of 4 TIE's with the Decimator. The mini swarm concept also does fairly well with a loaded out Phantom.

The next real question is what factions interest you (Imperial, Rebel, Scum) and how much budget do you have to plough into the game? With models costing $14.95 retail, building swarms get expensive. I tend to own at least one or two of everything just to have the full range of upgrade cards.

What should I load on the phantom when combined with the Decimator?

I seem to have a interest in the Imperials, but can definitely branch out to the Rebel scummery. :D And yeah, I've seen all the pricing involved with these little guys and I'm willing to invest in some.

I think list building can be a matter of flying what you like well enough and learning to counter the current "hotness". Just a few months ago, the meta was that you had to fly a Fat Han, Tie Swarm, or Phantom to be competitive. It was rock/paper/scissors. Nothing else could compete. If you look at what has been winning store championships in the past couple months and you see a lot of BBBBZ and XXXZZZ lists. There is even Tarn Nation with Tarn X-wing pilot and 5 x Z-95's. These lists would've been laughed at 4 months ago.

Oh, I think it was 6 Bandit Squadron Z-95's. There is also 3 pts left over for something like Hull Upgrade.
