I had a blast last year and I can't wait (hence posting from work ;-)
but I admit to nerves. Some of my problems include:
Time: How to get in all the games.
Further, Locals are now talking about starting "gaming with Scott"
at 8AM Thursday, and the ThoughtHammer drawing is at midnight.
Is this gaming 24 hours a day? (Yeah, a silly question.)

Rules - There wasn't a game last year that I didn't flub at least
one rule on, including crokinole. Am I going to be that bad on
rules again? I've located rules ahead for "Saulen der Erde",
Yspahan, Taluva, Khronos, BattleLore, Gheos, Thief of Baghdad,
Midgard, and Pieces of Eight. But when will I find time to read all
of these?
Playing games blind is exciting. Like trying to understand
the "Il Principe" rules.gulp

People - there are so many people to meet, and instead
all I do is play games. Last year I met the lovely Derk, loud Aldie,
forthright Valerie, and imposing Sterling (maybe I have the
descriptions mixed up), but I want to meet everyone! No time, no time.

Winning? Winning isn't everything, but last year I lost every game,
and followed BGG Con but a losing streak that lasted until Caylus
game out. I'm sure it wasn't the con's fault. Of course,
there was the rumor about Aldie making up a "Naughty and Nice"
list and sticking voodoo pins in the Naughty entries.
But that could explain all the twitching.

I'll calm down now. See people tomorrrow.

I am with you on that one. I had all the anticipation of preparation and getting people together, then there is this lull, where I have the dread of the airports. I remember back when flying was fun! And you were the only person on the plane. Now, it is just sit around and wait for 3 hours before your plane.

You have those Derk, Aldie and Valerie mixed up, but I will go with imposing!

I think each of has worries. I for instance, being my first BGG Con, am nervous to find games, meet people. I am not an out-going person. This is very atypical of me. I am sure all will be fine, but I don't know anyone (other than the few Coloradans that will be there).

There's never enough time to play everything you want. This would hold true even if the con was a month long.

Just some advice for those who haven't been before:

If you have friends coming with you, do not simply hang around your friends and play games (you can do this without spending the bucks to come to BGG.con). Branch out, meet new folks, say hi to folks, start up games, get in on other games. I didn't do as much of this as I should have last year, but I did do a lot of it. Basically, mix and mingle. I saw a couple of groups last year that stuck together like glue and played games with mostly themselves and maybe an extra added in. I was kinda dumbfounded at this.

If you are starting up a game and don't have any players or need a few more just have Derk yell for some more players for you! (yea, he can be loud! LOL!). Or, you can do it yourself. If you break out a game, people will inevitably roam over to see what's happening. That's how I got into a game of Goldbrau last year. Just happened to check it out and they asked if I wanted to play. Sure... why not.

Regarding sleep, because I played lots of WW, I usually didn't get to bed till around 5 or 6 AM... so... my sleep was all kinda screwed up. But, it's a con. Play as much as possible!

Oh, and get in LOTS of Werewolf!!!! hehehe....

Also, there is a wall that you can post times for games to be played. I plan on using this wall a little more this year. I'm bringing my own sign up sheets for games I really want to play so people can sign up and know exactly what time the game will start. This way I'm guaranteed players!

And I do want to play "Why did the Chicken..." again! That was hilarious and didn't take long!

Oh, and watch out for that Xandrytte chick… she’s a little whacko…

My nerves have been shot all week. BGG Con has even appeared in my dreams. I dreamt I got there and hid in my hotel room because I didn't know anybody. The fact is that I originally thought my partner was coming but because of a new job, she can't make it. I'm an outgoing person and give no thought to travelling to conferences on work topics. Somehow hanging with the geeks, seems daunting. I've never been to a game conference. Part of the nerves are based on the ambiguity of the situation. The other problem is, while I own over 130 games, I rarely get playing time with someone other than my self. I worry that I'll flub up on rules and annoy others with my amateur geek status.

I do however feel better having voiced my feelings.

On another topics, I am hoping to learn WW. I'm hoping there are some WW games for newbies!

See ya all Thursday!

Sandy, don't worry about a thing.

My vibe on this year is super high. Also - there are several people that are wearing black bgg.con vests. These are the friendliest of friendlies. They will welcome anyone into a game.

Sounds like lots of posts are from first timers to the Con. Since I am one, I find that encouraging. I think going by yourself to the con is an advantage, since it forces you to meet new folks. My son will be there for a while, but, like Alan suggests, I won't hang out with him the whole time. This is about meeting other folks interested in the hobby.

yay/

glad to see this post. i'm not nervous about going to the con, albeit it is my first of such events. but i have some similiar concerns, and concerns are always best when shared amongst others with similiar concerns =D

i guess for me, it's that concept of everyone wanting to try new games and not knowing the rules, or finding someone willing to teach you a game. seems like a lot to impose on people.

oh well, i guess we'll find out tomorrow. either way i'm pretty excited about making the trip and spending the next few days gaming with others that share the passion.

/yay
