Why for this life there's no man smart enough, life's too short for learning every trick and bluff.

US, turn 1, no handicap:

Asia Scoring
ME Scoring
Europe Scoring
CIA Created
UN Intervention
Captured Nazi Scientist
Special relationship
NORAD

I can think of one or two ways it could be worse, but this is brutal. What would you do with this hand?

Despite your hope, there is not even any inherent symbolism; gravity is simply a coincidence.

Get the scoring cards out ASAP: Headline ME before you're couped out, then play the other two unless defcon gets to 3 (in that case, play CIA first) (was thinking of another card)?

Headline Middle East - the only card the USSR can headline that will affect the scoring is Nasser, and no competent USSR player will headline that turn 1.

Keep UN, everything else is ops, you have 7 ops, just get out of Israel in the Middle East, put 1 in S Korea, take the Med countries in Europe.

This is a good hand to go with the empty West Germany setup, I'd go 4 in Italy and 1 each in Austria, Greece and Turkey. If he puts 4 in W Germany, happy days (ish) it's 4 ops he's not putting in Middle East or Asia.

You could keep NORAD to take France but haven't seen DeGaulle, Suez or Socialist Governments so it might be wise to just give up on France as well (3 more ops he has to put in and you might get it back later with an AR7 break of control followed by headlining Truman Doctrine). Make sure you keep Italy and get the Med countries. Score Europe before he gets a non-BG. Score Asia asap, you might get hit for Domination here but there's not a lot can you do.

What was his headline? On the plus side if he Red Scares you, you only lose 2 ops

Ben, I'd definitely go with empty WG as you can't defend against Purge and Blockade. Headline ME and score Asia as quickly as possible, before a NBG country is taken. Then you'll be able to score Europe, and have avoided domination all round. Since your opponent will likely take India/ Pakistan for the future you'll want presence in the ME via Lebanon, and to drop an op into South Korea and to reach Thailand if possible. It might be a good thing if you provoke a coup war in Lebanon, Colombia, or if he plays Vietnam Revolts as that's an efficient use of 1 op cards. Also remember that if all these scorings go by Africa is now as valuable so begin the Africa crawl soon.

I've seen two suggestions for dropping 1 op into South Korea.

Isn't this a mistake, prior to Korean War being played? Especially without control of Japan (or Taiwan), it seems like there's a good chance that this 1 op play would not only be wasted, but actually turned against you (when the war flips that op to Red).

Putting 1 in S Korea means the USSR will have to give you the China Card to take it outright. The war is a 50/50 proposition at best, I don't think you should be excessively afraid of it as the US.
