I just got a new copy of 1861 delivered. Nice neat and compact packaging and quite heavy for the size. I cracked the film wrap and lifted the lid to allow gravity to seperate it from the base.

And then it hit me, that awesome smell of a new game. It must be the printers ink or the adhesive, or an emulsion of both, all bottled up and then released.

So I got to thinking, if a wine has a bouquet, flowers have a perfume and food has an aroma, what is the smell of a game called?

Perhaps a generic could be a 'Gamanation'.

Perhaps certain genres could have differing Gamanations;

Euros: An Odor
Ameritrash (such a bad word): A Whiff
Wargames: A stench
Abstract: A Tang

It would make reviews a whole lot more sexy and incomprehensible;

"The heavy combat title had a real stench to it but when the board was laid out I was struck by the tang of the black and white hexes backed up with a slight whiff from the 4 sided dice. This was a zesty little swine"

I'm going to try it and see if Admin freeze me out.

Again.

I've noticed that many CCGs have a unique smell to them. My Magic cards smell different than Doomtown or Netrunner. I won't go so far as to train myself to identify a game by its smell, though.

Have you MtG players out there ever noticed it, that unmistakable scent of new cards?

The worst of them all has to be Tempus from Cafe Games. I think it comes from the ink.

Another one is Rheinlander from Face2Faces games. Awfull!

Oh, no.... the worst is undoubtably the smell of the rubber mat included in 'Wits & Wagers!'

I thought that something had died and crawled into the box.

Sorry, but Nexus Ops tops all:

- It's the "Reek of the Week" blush
- It's the "Fume that fills the Room" cry
- It's the "Smell from Hell" yuk
- It's the "Fetor that won't be Bettered" gulp

Keep 'em coming... shake

Worst game smell, the Plastic Cards in Hecatomb, or Gloom.

For some reason the gloom smeel comes back every time they are shuffled.

Reading your recent posts has been like dipping my bottom over and over into a bath of the silkiest oils and creams.

YES YES YES. This is what cancer smells like, I am convinced. It does not go away!

It's from those awful artificial-crocodile-skin carrying cases. Chucked, but the smell will linger forever.
