I just got this game, my first ever Risk! I know, I know lol

We quite enjoy it, but have only played with 2 and 3 players. We found that 2 player, so far, seems to have one person getting lucky on dice early on and then dominating which makes the other person angry lol.

As noobs, I welcome any advice in improving in this regard, or tactics to fight back, however, my main reason for posting is that I am unsure where to start with the myriad of expansions.

From what I can tell, any expansion I will have to print myself as the official ones seem to be as rare as hen's teeth.

But where do I start? Is there one that is particularly better than others for 2-3 players? I may also be interested in solo, I gather that amoebas may play solo?

Thanks in advance for any assistance

Factions.

It adds the most, while needing the least. All you need to do is print the faction cards and you're done.

Well, almost. Some of the Factions use the Tech commander. And that would be my #2 pick.

For the Tech commander you need to make a deck of command cards and find something to use for the commanders.

I second marhawkman's opinion. Another reason that he didn't mention is that Factions and the Tech commander are official expansions, whereas most of the material available here on BGG is fan-made. Don't get me wrong, a lot of the fan-made stuff is great, but if you're just starting out I would suggest sticking to 'official' materials. (That being said, I don't recommend the Amoebas expansion, I find it to be too silly and random for Risk).

If you're thinking about printing off extra maps, I suggest looking into Geoff Burbidge's Antartica mini-expansion. Like factions, it's a small add-on that offers a lot in terms of gameplay. If you really want to get serious with replacement maps, I would suggest starting with Mars, again because it is an official expansion and was probably better play-tested than most of the fan-made ones.

If you're thinking about multiple maps at once, such as marhawkman's "Inter-planetary Risk" or my "Galactic Risk" variants, I strongly suggest starting with a replacement map - playing a game just on Mars, to get used to new maps, before going all in with two (or three or four) at once.

Oh and it's good to keep in mind the number of official factions.

6

They are: Fusion Conservancy, Havok, Preservation, Primus Oceanus, Silicon Knights, Tranquility.

It's kinda like their plan was to make one faction for each commander (including tech). Several of them heavily emphasize use a specific commander.

While there are many others, several of which are a lot of fun, the others are not official factions and some have balance issues as originally written.

Church of Him requires a heavy offense focus, and can self destruct if you mess up.

Free Militia, as written is a bit OP since it says for you to start with FOUR commanders. IMO it'd be reasonably balanced at 3. It's fun to play though.

Gayans is focused on flexibility. With Gayans you can discard command cards to pay energy costs, thus allowing you to spend all your energy, then use command cards to pay costs for other command cards.

Megacorp is pretty simple, get more troops. As written, it's a bit weak IMO since you only get one commander to start.

Republicanists, enh kinda boring, it uses nearly the same setup as playing without factions. Works fine, though. Might actually be a bit weak since the ability is basically 1 free energy, but automatically spent on turn bidding.

And that's just a few. People have come up with a lot of faction ideas over the years.

I came up with one called "Paradox Paradigm" that emphasizes mixing Nuclear with Diplomacy.

Thanks to all of you for your responses, most helpful

I'm looking forward to many more plays in the near future....we just have to remember to keep calm when the dice are evil! Tom vassal was right when he said this game can make the most calm person lose their rag lol. (I think it was his video I'm remembering)

Thanks again guys

I was looking for a nice medium heavy alternative to our regular TI3 gaming sessions and opted for Risk 2210.

Including the mentioned expansions seems like a good thing to do.

Are these expansion somewhere on the geek?
Could someone help me out?

Cheers,
Alwin

There should be files of them. Did you look on the sub-pages for the expansions?

That's one version of the faction cards. I personally like the art style of the other one better. Also, it's more fun when you have a dozen or so options.

Hmmm... odd it seems like it USED to be there. :/ weird.

It's too bad Matt never finished work on the other planets. :/

He had a half-finished version of Venus.

http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/424859/venus-map-prototype/p...

then there was this: http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/614598/mercury-map-and-galac...

BTW, I just noticed that Matt never added the landing dots to Cronus and Dahak. (Pluto map)

Matt never got around to rebuilding it but I made a map prototype for Eris and Dysnomia. http://boardgamegeek.com/image/683840/risk-2210-d

Thanks for all the help with finding the files!

One more question on the Antarctica expansion.
How many "Global Warming" diplomat cards should be put in the diplomat deck?

Just one or multiple copies?

[Whoops... found it in the links. One card. RTFM ]

Sorry everyone! It's been hard to work on any of this stuff since my son was born! Hopefully I can find some free time to work on it again in the future.

Hey Matt
Do you still have that cool map of the world ? few years ago I saw your post showing a giant size map of the world and you and your friends were playing six player and it looked epic !
I do not think it is in the files here, even if it was there is no way for me to print a colour copy, it would cost a fortune.

I just wanted to know if you still have it ?
Cheers

Hmm... I'll have to look into that. When you say map of the world, do you mean when I combined like 4 maps together for one big game?

If you want to print out the maps, I shared them in an Artscow album. Several times a year Artscow has a coupon where you can print them for cheap. In fact, right now you can get (3) 30x20 prints for $26.99 (coupon code SMALLCAN20, valid through 6/29/15) and (3) 12x18 prints for $16.99 (coupon code SMALLCAN12, valid through 6/29/15).

Full Maps - Mars, Io, Titan
http://www.artscow.com/gallery/canvas/risk-2210-custom-maps-...

Minimaps - Phobos & Deimos (Mars moons), Asteroids, Rhea (Titan moon)
http://www.artscow.com/gallery/canvas/risk-2210-minimaps-y5q...

You'll still need to print out cards, but this should make ordering the maps a lot more affordable.

Insurgency Gaming has some stuff as well http://www.insurgencygaming.com/index.htm I ordered a deck through them and hated the quality of it (they were basically business cards) but it's there if you want it.

Also you can use this card generator http://www.grinborg.com/Risk2210CardCreator.html to create your own it's pretty good too.

EDIT: If you decide to use the custom card creator I spent some time figuring out the ideal sizes for images:

1600 1160
1400 1015
1200 870
1000 725
800 580
600 435
400 290
200 145

Hopefully they still hold true.

Speaking on my good friends behalf I'd say must haves are the Factions, Tech C, Resistance C, Major Promo cards, Antarctic and the mission pack.

Those have kept us really busy and added a long waited bonus to the game.
Also they amp up the games replayability A LOT!

Heres where a mostly got mine:

Very helpful site. Thanks for the creators!
