Two panzer jocks in the South Seas hoping that soon they'll get lei'd--

You gotta help me, man!
It's spreading all over the universe!
Can it possibly be stopped?

At one time Poker was something known by many but rarely if ever a subject for the mass media; indeed it was something of a novelty. I can remember Amarillo Slim and some other players giving a demonstration on The Tonight Show some time in the seventies. It was an interesting demonstration--and it was 25-odd years before these guys again crossed my picture tube.
Then came ESPN, which provided coverage of the Main Event at the World Series Of Poker. Well, you have to have something to fill air time, and it was no more of an intrusion than fishing shows or pro wrestling.
But somewhere, something happened.
Somehow it started to grow, and in a manner resembling Arch Oboler's infamous Chicken Heart.
ESPN's coverage increased. Then it was picked up by Game Show Network. Fox Sports Net. It even started showing up in Wendy's Hamburger commercials.
But I always managed to get a hold of myself. I always knew that there were certain areas where poker could never penetrate.

Last night I saw a trailer for the new James Bond movie.
Whether he's played by Connery, Lazenby, Moore, Dalton or Brosnan, there are certain eternal verities about Commander James Bond:
>He likes vodka martinis, shaken, not stirred
>To paraphrase Mad magazine, he has a license to kill and a learners' permit to make out
>At the casino, his game of choice is baccarat.
So here's the new Bond, in his dramatic face-off with the villain Le Chiffre across a baccarat table.
But they're not playing baccarat.
Good Lord, they are playing...
TEXAS HOLD 'EM!
I don't know what conclusions you might draw, but--
Draw?
DRAW?!
Oh Lord, it is everywhere!
My life is a flop!
Where can I turn?
I feel as if I'm drowning in a river!
Okay Dave, calm down. Deep breath, do something you like. Music, that's it! An old favorite, KISS Alive! Load into the player, hit Play, and the first cut is--

DEUCE?!?
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA---

Texas Hold 'Em doesn't really suit the image of James Bond, so I'll back you up there.

Poker's not cool anymore - everyone's playing it. It will soon die a slow and ignominious death.

I read Casino Royale years ago and I'm pretty sure the whole book was one big Bacarat game followed by Bond getting tortured and then it ends.

I used to play lots of poker, and I really had fun. Now it is everywhere and I'm so sick of it. I'm sick of everyone thinking they are so cool because they play poker and how they toss around idiot terms to prove their coolness. "Oh, he flipped a cowboy on the turn but I pulled the bullet on the river." Shut the heck up with that.

Just get out of here with your personalized chips, silly green tables, serious faces, sunglasses indoors, and your booyah or whatever you say when you pull the inside straight.

It was so much more fun on a card table with cheap beer, naked lady cards and a archied-out 3-inch stogie.

I'm just saying.

Yeah, like when the music you listened to on a cool non-commercial radio station six months ago is played to death on the "nana-channel" and there's a KennyG/Richard Clayderman/Pan Pipe rendition being played in the elevator....

Boy, good thing you haven't been paying attention for the last few years -- you'd really be sick of poker by now.

It's STILL really nice to know that ESPN won't pick up NHL Hockey, but they'll play Poker RERUNS ad-nauseam! That's RERUNS! On a LIVE sports channel! You've got to be frickin' kidding me!

I'm living in a town (Pittsburgh) with FIVE of the best young players in the league (Crosby, Malkin, Staal, Whitney, and Marc-Andre-couldn't-spell-his-last-name-if-you-gave-me-a-dollar-guy-in-goal) and I can't watch a single game on TV! I COULD buy the local Fox Sports channel, or Versus (previously OLN) but my cable provider only provides either of them with a $20 increase and a bunch of channels I wouldn't watch.

Arrrgghh! By the time ESPN decides to show REAL sports again, the team will be all settled into their new arena - in Kansas City!

Poker's not even a sport! They just sit there, sweaty, stinking, and nervous for hours on end, sipping over-priced drinks, and listening to ipods! (Yeah. you think a table at a game convention smells bad? Wow.)

It's pathetic, really, that sports networks run dog shows, darts, cheerleading, aerobics, the WNBA and (worst of all) poker to fill up their programming.

I like Jennifer Tilly's assets as much as the next guy. But who wants to watch a bunch of pale, sweaty, sunglass-wearing asshats doing their best corpse imitations? Until one gets, against all odds, exactly the right card and proceeds to celebrate as if he has just hit an off balance three-pointer with the league's best defender in his face to win game seven of the NBA championship series.

Nice job there, dude, the way you, uh, watched the dealer turn over that card. Sheer genius.

The recent oversaturation of holdem is exactly the reason why we never want boardgaming to go mainstream. Boardgaming has no chance to go mainstream, but even if it did, I would not want it to.

What you may not realize is that Poker's "overnight" revolution was a long time in coming.

I remember watching the World Series of Poker on TV with Jimmy the Greek and Brent Musberger in when I was around 10 or 11, so that was 77 or 78.

ESPN started airing it a decade later.

It took a long time for poker to become an overnight sensation, and many of us who learned to play when we were kids have watched the general public catch on, happy that some of them finally get to see the skill and strategy that are present in the game. I love the game, and love to watch it on TV (thank god for hole cams).

There is a point of oversaturation, but we haven't hit it yet, and you can expect there to be poker on tv for a long, long time.

I used to tell people that nothing is a sport if you can win while being 50 or more pounds overweight, but playing tournament poker takes skill, stamina (it is hard to stay mentally alert and aware and to make quick decisions under stress for 14 hours at a stretch), concentration, and effort. If auto racing qualifies as a sport, then Poker does too.

PS. Baccarat isn't even a decent game. The decisions are childishly simplistic and while it carries a certain mystique, that is because of things like the Bond films and novels giving it allure it does not deserve.

I'm with the people happy to see lots of poker around.

It's a real gamer's game that actually got popular. If it were invented by some German guy and sold in a box with "Alea 12" on the side, then it'd be in the top 10 here at the geek. Sure lots of nongamers play, but so what! That just gives me something to do on Sunday nights when nobody will play T&E against me!

I've got nothing against Poker really, although I personally can't stand the game.

And seriously, who the hell would watch POKER on TV?!! Damn game is way over exposed.

But all of this, all of it, I could forgive.

But James Bond, playing Texas Hold'em?????

God, I just threw up in my mouth.

I can't stand this poker thing. I don't watch much tv so that doesn't bother me. It's the 007 thing that yanks my chain. It was bad enough that they made him blonde. I am a huge JB fan and I don't like when they put that crap into the movie. I am appalled! OUCH. Oh well, I agree, it will die, but it may be longer than you think. The Catholic churches have been picking it up in favor of BINGO. They see a money maker when it's there.kiss

Get over it. Daniel Craig is a SENSATIONAL actor and it's likely he'll be the best Bond at least since Connery. He'll carry his end excellently so all that is left is to blame the writers or director. So what if he's blonde and blue-eyed? It's hardly like he's uber-blonde and so what if he was? He looks ruggedly tough but also attractive (so I've been told!!!) and is English! (Huzzah!) He'll be less cheesy one-liners and smarmy perverted old man (like Moore and Brosnan became) and more 'get on and do it' no frills 38 year old.
Best Bond choice in years.

And as for the poker tournament.....meh...In the book the baccarat tournament is central and most of the book but in this the poker will just be a part of the bigger picture.
I'm looking forward to it massively.

Watching Go and Shogi on Japanese TV is perhaps the strangest experience.
In Go especially they keep cutting back to the studio where some old dude and a younger nubile lass have a big vertical board with magnetic pieces which they use to run through possible moves and past moves to explain what could happen...Odd.

On Bond playing Poker: it IS a modern remake of a more-than-50-years-old story. I don't believe Bond drove a 2007 Ford Mondeo in the original tale, either.

Cited at IMDB.com:

In the novel "Casino Royale" as written in the 1950s, the big-stakes card game was Chemin de Fer and set in the South of France. For the movie and the new millennium, the big stakes game has been updated to the high-stakes poker card game of Texas Hold'em which in real life attracts bets with 10 or 20 million dollar pots.

Luke....I don't really know about the new guy. It does bother me that he is blonde for some reason though. Probably because all of the others haven't been. Brosnan has been my favorite, only because Golden Eye kicked so much ass. Plus they made a killer video game out of it.

I agree...Hold'em? that kind of cheapens it for me. What really gets me is that it isn't even a new movie. Aarrrghh.

I am a big poker player. Love the game (NOT a sport, and neither is driving a car, thank you very much). I like watching it for about 20 minutes, then I get bored as hell. I'm with the guy above....put the NHL on please! There is a game I can watch any team play and love every minute of it.

And I am totally digging those chips in the pic above? how much did those cost to do that? How many did you get, 500, 1000?

Personally I believe poker is in its peak right now. When Chan (sp?) won back in the day the purse was like, what $300,000 or so, and only a couple hundred playing in the tournament? Now the person is like $12 million to the winner with like 8,000 people signing up. That is a lot of idiots paying a lot of money to get in. Only a handful are really good, which is why you always see the top players. I see the crowd in the wsop dropping to about 3-4,000 and stabilize, once most of these fish realize they suck.

Give me poker over Golf, BaseBore or the 5 seconds of action and then 30 seconds of waiting for the next 5 seconds of action that is American football. ESPN does an incredible job in their coverage of the World Series of Poker. They focus on the players and their personalities so that it's easy to pick favorites and hated players. They develop plenty of tension and excitement. I look forward to every event they show.
