Over on the Advanced Squad Leader Facebook page MMP has suggested publication of a pocket edition of the rulebook. They are asking for opinions on pricing.

This has also sparked some debate in other directions. Many players are clamouring for a pdf version of the rules.

Some of us would love the pocket edition, but are also interested in more regular updates to the binder rules. My suggestion is for a yearly update bundle that would fix known errata and move many of the later rules to their proper place (terrain rules from historical modules for example).

What are your thoughts?

I don't care for a pocket version, but I crave for an (official) electronic one.

Why would I need a pocket version of the rules which still weighs 2 pounds when I can have all the rules on my tablet, with hyperlinks and all that fancy stuff?

i would like both versions, with preference for the digital one.
a pocket version would indeed still be quite big, unless its split in several parts
both would be easier for referencing rules during play

An official electronic rulebook should be the way to go.

Official electronic version preferred with periodic updates.

Yearly updates to Hardcopy version would be second choice.

No interest in pocket version here.

I have pdf versions of the Master SFB, Fed & Emp and Fed & Commander books. I use them on my iPad; I rarely go to the hard copy rules anymore. I'd be a happy camper if I could do the same with ASL!

[edit] And I would pay for it, just like I did for the previously mentioned ADB products above.

It would be nice to have a 3rd edition with all the errata included since the 2nd edition in the current print form.

I want an electronic version with extensive hyper links, incorporating all errata and a section containing Q&A. It should also have a subscription model for annual updates.

Clearly MMP want to maintain traditional control of the rulebook as non-PDF -- as if it's still 1995 -- so don't want to go with the flow of the w-g hobby overall over the last decade, which are living PDF rules.

MMP is gonna miss the boat with diversions like this; they know what we want already, right? They should know its the way to go, but there is over concern with revenue drop if they make the rules electronic and would rather us buy little dino-rules books.

PDF will grow the hobby and serve as a basis of revving up production of modules, that is the correct business model working today with many games series and with more dynamic action.

A pocketbook rules handbook would not grow the hobby and get those starter kits moving along. Are young gamers going around with pocketbook rules?

Such people use kindles now, pads, etc. not pocketbooks for this kind of stuff -- MMP please point yourselves in the right direction marketing wise -- we would love to see you succeed and thrive.

Maybe a better idea is selling the rights of the rulebook, take the money, letting a more ambitious organization take the hobby to the next level.

How in the world can you make a pocket edition of the RB?

You can't leave anything out because any given rule might be required in any casual game. The rules are dense and inter-woven with info you need for a given situation often scattered between multiple sections.

The MMP gang needs to get their thumbs out of their butts and actually follow through with the digital rulebook that they started on years ago and then apparently abandoned. That's what players want.

Give players a digital rulebook and they can put it on their portable device and, hey guess what?, now they have a pocket rulebook!!

And even fix some problems and make some improvements.

I play primarily ASL and OCS. One of the great things about the OCS developers is that the rulebook is updated regularly and changes are made in order to improve the system. And it's freely available!!

Not only does the ASL rulebook have about 1000 errata that are not incorporated into the newest edition, but they NEVER make any changes or updates to the rules to improve playability or fix problems with game logic.

I'm not a big fan of the idea of pdf version of the rules. I would prefer html or epub (I actually have and use an epub version on my iPad regularly.)

I agree with others here about them moving to a subscription model. Serve up the rules on a website with appropriate page caching so we can access it even offline.

As for the "pocket edition" which is far bigger than a pocket and bigger than my tablet... I don't see the point.

As they just "completed" adding the last core module, a subscription seems unnecessary.

How much change will you have?
5-10 clarifications?
It's been around for a couple years... Fix the broken rules and make the Final Edition.

Printing the same in unerratacized version of the rules is pointless...
3rd edition means they made changes... Well none are planned for it.... So it's 2nd edition regurgitated in your pocket....

An e-rules would get more people looking at the rules...
1) Ya need a 30 pg. Index.... It's hard to find. THAT rule.
2) So what if it's gets copied. All present players will buy it ( if done right) and only new players will steal it... So what? Then they'll go buy the parts to play. It's so sad that the music industry collapsed.
3) Repair the rules on the fly... Hook up to the web for your daily porn session and you see the ASL update starting in the background (WITH a summaryof changes).

I think the pocket is 15 years too late...

A pocket rulebook is a really dumb idea.

Look - players with any amount of basic computer skills have scanned, updated and converted to PDF their rulebook already. In my personal copy there is only one thing missing: hyperlinks. I call it my "errata free" rulebook. I printed a copy of it and bound it for my own use. I print new pages whenever errata comes out. Basically, I'm doing for my self what MMP should be doing for me, but fails to do.

There is a "pirate" html version of the rulebook out there that has hyperlinks, done by an guy for his own use and 'distributed' in a very discrete way to people who know him or meet him and ask about it. I have seen a copy of it in operation.

Go to any tournament and you see guys referring to their I-pads, not the hard copy. ALL of those people would instantly buy an official version and happily pay for periodic updates.

MMP is throwing away money by not making an official version.

Link to this page? I ask because I don't know of any official ASL page on Facebook. There is an official MMP page, but there is nothing about this 'pocket edition' posted there.

And there's not a word about it on Gamesquad where virtually every cranky old ASL player still active likes to hang out and complain.

Have we been trolled?

This is the first time I've been accused of trolling!

If you search Facebook you will see there are two ASL pages. The thread I mentioned was posted by Mr Youse on March 21st.

I am not sure MMP actually said there were going to make one - seems to me that they just asked what would people be willing to pay for one ?

Given the responses, it looks to me that the interest wasn't that high at all.

Here is the FB posting btw: https://www.facebook.com/groups/advancedsquadleader/10155326...

This is closed group, btw, so it won't show up unless you are memeber I guess.

If I were MMP I wouldn't trust a forum to gauge interest. Why not do a standard preorder?

It looked to me that MMP was trying to get a feel for what players wanted to pay for it.

Though I am not sure why they didn't out out the questions on more forums.

I like the idea of the yearly updates as well as a pdf version of the rules. I would not purchase a pocket edition. I also wish MMP would discuss these things on its own website for those of us who do not Facebook.
