So the more I think about Armada, the more I want to see a Battlestar Galactica version. The mechanics look great for it, including the 6 turn maximum.

Instead of the Armada objectives, there would be some way to procedurally determine setups, or even use the Cylon fleet cards from the board game.

The basic missions would be fleet defense. A civilian fleet is scattered around the battlestar(s), a CAP is in place with the battlestars capable of launching a ready reserve. There would be a mechanic for jumping out civvies during the fight, and then vipers would need to get back to Galactica before it could jump out. (Or be lost)

Other missions could certainly be drawn up to avoid repetition.

Anyone know of BSG minis at the Armada scale? I doubt FFG will do this, but it wouldn't be THAT hard to set this all up provided some appropriate minis existed.

While we're at it, combine it with an RPG and make a campaign out of it.

Thoughts?

As a business proposition, the game company would need to design and offer a wide range of models and relevant upgrades to keep the game interesting and the customers buying more product.

Star Wars has a fairly rich background between the movies, animated shows, novels and video games to provide a deep array of choices for fighter models, weapons, star ships (both large and small) and characters.

BSG, while great as pop fiction, has a fairly narrow assortment of fighting ships and the civilian ships do little besides explode or run away. Moreover, the series only envisioned two surviving Battlestars. Hard to imagine a product line what would offer much. Of course you could try and place it in the early human-cylon war period with conjectural fighting ships and fleets but then the series characters would largely be too young to be represented.

Which is why I'm looking for the minis sans game. Here's a battlestar, I didn't find matching basestars or fighters.

I think this would be an awesome game. It does look like a great fit between theme and game system.

I also quite like the idea of firing lil nuke missiles and resolving blast effects.

The concerns raised by Rulesjd doesn't seem too pressing. I mean, every game doesn't need to be designed for countless expansions or tournament play.

One hole in the system, no shields in BSG. So certain things like redirect tokens wouldn't be used and engineering points would need to be reexamined.

Email for sizes on the ships.

Not sure why you feel the fighters are over priced. I know they come in two sizes. The smaller are about 50 cents each (24 for $12: https://www.ravenstarstudio.com/store/p222/Viper_Mk_1_Fighte... )

and the larger 9 for $12: https://www.ravenstarstudio.com/store/p235/15mm_Viper_Mk_7.h...

I just saw the $12. Not the 24 for $12. Big difference. Thanks for pointing it out!

Thoughts on ship movement?

I'm thinking Galactica should move like a Neb-B or Victory. Basestars never seem to move much in the show so its hard to estimate what would work. Essentially, they will pop in and close with the fleet. So they need to have enough speed to be a threat (and close to nuke range). The question is, are they faster than the fleet, and the Galactica is faster but doesn't use full engines due to covering the fleet. Or are they faster than Galactica as well.

As for relative power, 4 Basestars took out Pegasus at close range in pretty short order at New Caprica. (correct me if my memory is wrong). Should 1 Battlestar = 1 Basestar?

I think its clear Pegasus should have a fairly powerful front battery.

Galactica should probably have a 2 dice anti-squadron. Also, in universe pilots are warned to stay out of the chaff. So should anti-squadron fire be able to hit friendlies?

Other thoughts?

There is a miniatures game called Colonial Battlefleet I believe was written with Battlestar Galactica in mind:
http://www.wargamevault.com/product/81234/Colonial-Battlefle...

They have a supplement with ship stats ( http://www.wargamevault.com/product/86865/Colonial-Battlefle... ) that may be worth looking at as it should give some insight as to differences between the ships (at least as interpreted by the author).

I don't have them, but have considered getting them and some of the Ravenstar and or Bergstrom ships and starting a BSG project. Now with Armada out, a potential BSG mod to it is getting me more interested in getting some of those ships.

They could always put it in the same setting as BSG Online. Plenty of ships to choose from. It's not likely, but the stuff is there for it.

One basestar is likely a bit less powerful than a Colonial battlestar. During the attack on the Resurrection Ship we see Pegasus + Galactica make short work out of a pair of basestars after their fighter squadrons were pulled away. Even during the battle for New Caprica, Galactica is holding its own against the initial two basestars in orbit before more arrive.

Basestars tended to rely on their massive fighter screens and numbers to tip the odds in their favor.

I think the shields themselves could be renamed armor, or something similar, though I do agree that engineering points would need tweaking.

Oh, I dunno, this seems like plenty to start with:

Quote:

Viper I
Viper II
Viper III
Viper VII
Blackbird
Stealthstar
Raptor
Raptor Ground Assault
Atmospheric Shuttle MkI
Atmospheric Shuttle MkII

Cylon War Raider
Cylon Raider
Cylon Heavy Raider

Pegasus
Galactica
Berzerk
Loki
Valkyrie
Defender
Orion

Cylon War Basestar
Cylon War Spike Basestar
Cylon War Guardian Basestar
Modern Basestar
Resurrection Ship

Maybe cylons could use some squadron variety, but upgrades/special types could work there as well.

Naw, its' fine. Treat shields as armor, hull as total structural integrity. Redirect is used for the concept you often see in SciFi of rolling the ship to present a flank that is less damaged.

Engineering just represents patching up compartments, rerouting components from one sector to another, etc.

Just an FYI for folks. My time to work on this is limited*, so if others have the inspiration, please go with it. I was hoping this could be a group project anyway.

*Yes, I know I appear on the forums a bunch. But its in small disconnected chunks. I don't have the uninterrupted time I personally need to do justice on a project like this. (7 month old child, and being faculty)

What BSG Shapeway minis did you use in the pictures above?

I used Rupi's models for the Capital ships, and Mel's for the fighters (though I'll be switching over to using smaller fighters from the FFG board game).

For the rag tag fleet I got a deal on http://starfightershipyards.com/battlestar-galactica-minatur... stuff on eBay, and bought a couple cylon capital ships from there as well.

Here's a list of other places to get BSG model's that I've found over the years:

Studio Bergstorm http://studiobergstrom.com/index.php?productID=239 metal, smallish
Raven Star https://www.ravenstarstudio.com/store/c27/Tin_Men.html metal, smallish, composition, biggish
B-3 Designs https://sites.google.com/site/behrlewhubbuchiiisculptor/mini... metal small ships, fighters, no cylon baseships
Iron Wind http://ironwindmetals.com/store/index.php?cPath=273 metal, non canon, smallish

Frankly, I wish I could find much larger Battlestars and Basestars (in the 5-6" range) so that they'd fit on Armada large bases (and have smaller ships like the Berserk and Valkyrie be in scale). As it is I've standardized on Medium bases.
