Hello everyone!

Gaming for three seems to be rather difficult compared with other popular numbers like 4 or 5.
Our team is pretty small - 3 players mostly and we are looking for a new boardgame to buy.
What we are looking for :

* Complexity - generally speaking we are looking for medium or medium/high complexity game
* Lenght - 2 hours max (90 min would be ideal)
* Theme - theme is welcome but not nessecary
* Scale - playability for 3 should be in the main focus, but if the game is good for 2 or 4, thats the bonus too
* Depth & Replayability - should be high enough to want us to play the same game again!

Few title we are having in mind: Goa, San Marco, Web of Power, Puerto Rico,
but feel free to suggest anything, thanks a lot!

Goa, San Marco, Web of Power, Puerto Rico: thumbsup

Go with those, you've already made great choices!

Web of Power is a great game, but: it is not all that complex and can be played within 30 minutes.

Das ende des Triumvirats is a fine & clever little game for 3. It's the first title coming to my mind.

I like to play Friedrich and History of the World with 3 players

If you are looking for a little bit more "serious" stuff, Napoleon (AH / Columbia) is 30 years old but still one of the absolute best "easy" wargames ever made.

Though it's not very popular on this site, Age of Mythology is good with exactly 3 no more, no less.

I would throw in Santorini if you can find a copy only a few were made.

For easier to find games -

Without a doubt Carolus Magnus is the best game for three I have come across.
Santorini woud be second (it is a bit better for two)
San Marco would be next in my mind.

I just ordered Ende des Triumvirats and it looks to be very good (Z-man's games have been catching my eye for quite a bit).

Others that work well for 3 in my group:

Reef Encounter
Primordial Soup
Mississippi Queen
Taj Mahal
Puerto Rico (although I think it shines best as a 4-player game)
Tikal

If you like war; Vinci is at its best with 3 players. The game offers great replayability since the innovative attribute chips combine uniquely each game.

Das Spiel & New Games in Old Rome have many games in their respective collections that are ideal for 3 players.

Enjoy!

Alhambra (good with 3 to 5)
Carcassonne (good with 2 to 5)
Ticket to Ride (good with 3 to 5)
Wyatt Earp (good with 2 to 4)
San Juan (good with 2 to 4)
Louis XIV (good with 3 or 4)
Saint Petersburg (good with 2 to 4)
Colossal Arena (good with 3 to 5)

Three happens to be my preferred player count. A few games to consider:

Neuland
Reef Encounter
Logistico
1825 Unit 2
Keythedral
Through the Desert
The Bridges of Shangri-La
Sticheln
Bus
Kunst St├╝cke
City and Guilds
Die Dolmeng├Âtter
China: Grenzstreitigkeiten
Clans

If you want something slightly more themed than most of the games mentioned above, try Hunting Party. I own it but haven't played it, but from the rules it is clear the game was made for three players, and to play it with two or four you have to mess with the rules a bit. Think an advanced Clue set in Fantasy with a lot of individual player powers and equipment. Should be good.

China and Samurai are two good euros very enjoyable with three players.

Cleopatra and the Scoiety of Architects. We just played that yesterday with three and it was a very enjoyable and tense game. A lot going on... And it was a close match.

Using his intro - just seemed appropriate And when he mentioned themed, this was one that jumped to mind.

Why does Vinci work so well with 3? Most comments on BGG claim otherwise (namely that you shouldn't really bother with less than 4 players). I've only played a single 4p game and am a bit reluctant on trying it with 3. Care to elaborate on that?

My two cents... well I guess it is more like 6 cents.

Bohnanza
San Juan
Power Grid
No Thanks!
Risk 2210 A.D.
Samurai

San Juan is really good. Fun and fast. I would say the first choice on my list.

I like Vinci with 3 because the game hums along at a brisk pace. As you add more players to Vinci you end up waiting a much longer time for your turn to roll along. In my experience a 3 player game is done in 90 minutes. while a 6 player game is 3+ hours.
