Can anyone advise on how well/badly this would play solo?

I played it once solo and I had no problem with it. It's an interesting game.

I've played this solitaire a number of times. It worked well ... it helps if you formulate a bit of a campaign plan for the Crown player, i.e. "Bring the King's Peace to Virginia this year". Then you have a bit of focus and direction for the solitaire play. But the design is sound and supports solitaire quite well.
