For experienced players, I would recommend PR first but for newcomers to the hobby, I would recommend San Juan. San Juan also is two-player out of the box, and the two-player PR variant really changes the rules and game dynamics quite a bit. So, I guess what I am really saying that I would prefer teaching PR starting out with 3-4 players (I hate PR with 5) before tackling the two-player variant.

San Juan first.

Puerto Rico is a whole lot easier when a player understands...

...roles and their privileges. Also how role selection should benefit the player and minimize benefit to his/her opponent.

...how six buildings are similar to big buildings

...production buildings versus violet buildings

...generating income through production and trading.

Also, San Juan is a better 2 player game than Puerto Rico.

San Juan! It's just the better game of the two.

San Juan is a bit simpler, although it has it's own quirks. So it depends on how much of a gamer your wife is - and how much time you have. San Juan is quicker. Puerto Rico is by far the better game, though.

San Juan has no kingmaking and is forgivable, whereas Puerto Rico is in fact deeper, but has problems with sitting order and kingmaking.

Even San Juan has the possibility of kingmaking - choosing to build or not can swing the game.

More importantly, neither sitting-order nor kingmaking are issues in a two-player game !

Ok, I was thinking of the multiplayer game. I forgot the initial post says it shall be a 2p game. Sorry. You're right.

Or, to paraphrase the two arguments . . .

Paul King]Puerto Rico tastes great![/q]
