You can't rob Peter, Paul and Mary to pay yourself.

Down the block from us there's a 10YO boy who lives with his grandma. He's a bright kid, very energetic. He stays at our house after school a few times a week until his grandma gets off work. Unfortunately, he gets in trouble at school from time-to-time. This latest time, his grandma has banned him from video games, and has come to us asking for help with getting games for the two of them. And now I come to you.

The grandma is a non-gamer, but I'm sure she's willing to try different games. We've taught the boy a number of games, all of which he's enjoyed. These include:

Heroscape
Nexus Ops
Master Labyrinth
TtR
Sleeping Queens
Carcassonne - H&G
Hey! That's My Fish!

We'll let them borrow a few of our games from our collection. And we'll probably play these games with them from time-to-time. My question is: What games can they borrow or purchase? Here's the primary criteria I'm looking for:

- Scales well for 2, 3 or 4 players
- No scary or creepy theme
- 45 min playing time tops
- Easy rules and set up time

Thanks!

I've had the best luck with card games with older people as it's something they see as a more adult oriented games.

I would normally recommend Lost Cities, perhaps Odin's Ravens but you may want to try San Juan (as I see it's already in your collection).

Carcassonne - H&G

I would not recommend this. It has terrifying effects on Grandmas.

The Carcassonne series would all be great, and Alhambra has a fairly nice 2-player version.

Suddenly a shot rang out! A door slammed. The maid screamed. Suddenly a pirate ship appeared on the horizon! While millions of people were starving, the king lived in luxury. Meanwhile, on a small farm in Kansas, a boy was growing up.

Tongiaki: Journey into the Unknown is also "bright and energetic" and fits all of your criteria. It seems like it would be a good option.

I don't know if it's "scary," (sea monsters eating people) but Escape from Atlantis (if you can find it) would be great.

If the boy is bright, as you say, he could probably handle a more think-y game like Through the Desert, as well.

Ticket to Ride?

I think through the desert might be fun but it isn't very macho. Most ten year old boys think about these sort of things.

Hmmmmm, what would my son (who is 10) AND his grandma play together?

My thoughts:
Boom-O
Rat-a-Tat Cat
Escape from the Hidden Castle
Blokus Duo
Heave Ho! (I think this would work especially well.)
Stratego
Loopin' Louie
TransAmerica

Mykerinos (great at 2,3 and 4)
Times Square (inexpensive and tons of fun - has a bar theme but still tame)
Maybe a dexterity game like Hamsterrolle or Bamboleo
I would suggest RA although it doesn't really fit in the 2 player catregory but as a group, nothing is more fun!

Hope that helps!

I would second the suggestion of a good dexterity game. But nothing with finger flicking---that might be hard for the grandma.

Go Old School - Scrabble. My grandma used to bust me up at Scrabble until I learned all those sneaky two-letter words.
