I was looking for games shops in Salzburg Austria as I was going there for a Conference and wanted to do a bit of shopping. Not only did I not find anywhere on GameStoreDB (even though I know now of at least four worth a visit) but was upset to find that all the latest posts to this database seem to be made up of the usual Internet spams for porn , drugs and suchlike.

So my questions are these :

1/. Does anyone else think its time this database cleaned up its act ?
2/. Who owns it and would anyone like to suggest how they go about doing it ?
3/. Should the Geek maintain its link to this database given the state its in ?
4/. How about some kind of mash-up or forum with Google Earth that could be protected and QA'd to the same high standards as the rest of BGG ?

I am the maintainer of GameStoreDB.com. Forgive my defensive tone, but your tone seems excessively critical.

Perhaps you misinterpret how this database is populated. All the stores in the DB are user supplied. If there are no shops in Austria, and you know of 4, please add them. That's how they get there.

You are correct, that earlier today someone posted a large amount of comment spam on a single page. I have purged it and do actively monitor the content. That said, one of the points of the wiki format is that anyone can change it. If you notice porn/drugs spam, delete it. This particular spam was isolated to the discussion page and was cleaned up within hours of its appearance.

In what way are you suggesting the act be "cleaned up"? It is a free service containing integrated Google maps, including hundreds of game stores, and is actively monitored and maintained by me. I am more than a little annoyed that you would say I need to "clean up my act".

I'm beginning to wonder if you've actually looked at the site. In a page prominently linked on the front page, called "About GameStoreDB" it clearly states I maintain it.

Scott includes the link as a courtesty to me in part for all of the admin and other work I've done on the site. What "state" is it in that you're reffering to?

You do see the Google Maps on every game page and every search results page, yes? That's what's usually meant by "mash-up".

I may make a KML (Google Earth) browsable version available at some point, but posts like yours don't encourage me to do anything.

Now a rant:

I've occasionally seen people complaining that the site doesn't contain European game stores. Every time, I suggest that they add the "numerous" stores they typically claim they know of. To date, there have been 7 stores added in Europe, and I personally added one of them. In contrast, in the past two weeks alone, in addition to 2 new stores, another 5 have had new information added. The reason it's got hundreds of American stores is because hundreds of people have added them. So, quit your complaining and add the stores you so proudly assert you know of.

Matthew ,
Thanks for knocking me off my high horse.

The combination of your response and what I've seen happening to your site today completely changes my attitude.

I'll be glad to add entries for the shops found in Salzburg and others that I know of in Scotland and London. It's astonishing that more European users haven't cottoned on to the database and helped to populate it.

I did notice that ... the link from the Front Page to the Discussion page took me to more guff about Phentermine.
And the About GameStore DB.com page referred to Phentermine Online and took me to the same Discussion page as above.

Now that's not a criticism - just an observation. I'd surmise that your webpages have been deliberately corrupted to look like that as part of the Spamming that took place. And I can see as I type that changes are being made to fix the corrupt pages.

Please accept my apologies if I came across overly critical. There are enough people using technology agin you without others carping at you from the sidelines. I'll try and contribute rather than criticise in future , and would encourage others (particularly outside the U.S.) to do the same.

Cheers.

This kind of comment spam is really annoying. I tweaked things a little bit on the site so it should be a bit less vulnerable to comment spam, but I'm reluctant to do a CAPTCHA or the like, but if the problem recurs, I'll put something in place.

Thanks. Having put a lot of work into the site, and having had other complaints about lack of European stores with minimal follow through has obvsiously sensitized me to criticism.

I see there's one in Austra now. I'm pleased to see that it geocodes well. Unfortunately, due to the Royal Mail's copyright on postal codes (?!) google geocoding (which I'm using) doesn't work in the UK. You can manually enter Lat/Long though, but I recognize this is a bit annoying to do.

For what it's worth . . . I use the GameStoreDB, as I travel a bunch for business. If I have some free time after work while on a trip, it's nice to have a resource that can zero-in on actual game stores without having to sort through a local phone book - trying to figure out which hobby store might carry games and/or which "game" store carries something other than used Hitachi GameSphere cartridges.

Once I came across a store in the DB that appeared to have moved (in Charlottesville, VA), so I entered a comment in the DB with a link to what appears to be their new location. But, by my reasoning, that's how the DB should work with user inputs. Also was a good reminder to check on the out-of-town stores in the DB via google first before taking the field trip to the location.

As soon as Royal Mail get a life, you'll get plenty of follow through from me.
