Do SAM (and SSM) regiments benefit from the +2 DRM of cities, mountains, etc. against AG attacks? if so, esthen most aircraft (with an AG of 2) will need to roll a 12 to get a hit on a SAM.

Also, if SAMs (and SSMs) take AG strike damage in shock half-steps rather than full steps, then SAMs in cities, etc will be invulnerable once the FICC LACMs, SEALs and the Widowmaker are expended - since it will take two 12's in 6 cosecutive GQ turns to destroy a SAM.

this result seems to conflict with recent successes against AA defence systems - Desert Storm, Serbia, Lebanon '82 and, I guess, Libya.

Yes, against AG attacks, SAM get the (-2) for the cover you mentioned. To your other points, there are many things to keep in mind, and to keep separate.

First, some aircraft do have AG scores of 3 or more.

Second, since the First Gulf War, it’s been standard practice to knock out enemy SAM with cruise missiles precisely because they do it better and are less vulnerable than jets. So yes, we have experienced great success against SAM, but that was with LACM, and aircraft with AG scores of 3 or more. So the game does not conflict with past success against AA systems, but rather shows you how it was achieved. Also, notice that half of the cases you mention (Desert Storm and Libya) lacked good cover.

Finally, remember that each “unit of play” (turn) spans only 4 hours. Again, in the past cases you mentioned we spent far more than 4 hours attacking those SAM. We often bombarded and flew multiple sorties over a period of several days to get the final “successful” result. So the true test of effectiveness would be played out over 6-12 turns, at least, not a single strike.

Thanks

John
