Gwen and Dave played a two player game of “Through the Desert”. This was our first time playing in a long time (and first time playing our OWN copy of the game) so there were some aspects of the game we had to figure out all over again.

Just after laying the water tiles down we re-arranged a few of them because many of the high scoring markers were concentrated in one area. During initial placement of camels (and riders) we spread out, but in a couple of key areas we had camels of the same shade very close to each other. Almost from the start a race for yellow camels began. Pretty soon Dave was faced with a one camel advantage over Gwen and one yellow camel left. The problem then was leaving the yellow camel for Gwen (thus a tie for yellow camels) or ending the game. Dave chose to continue the game but that only prolonged his agony as Gwen trumped him in several areas.

Gwen ended the game a few turns later with that very same yellow camel. Unfortunately, in addition to Dave’s poor strategy during the game, he had forgotten about the “enclosed spaces” points awarded at the end – so instead of merely winning, Gwen kicked Dave’s tuchus with a score of 92 to 70!!
