I read through the FAQ, but it doesn't really seem to answer the question.

From what I've read, any element at a junction of three tundra tiles is removed during the glaciation phase. It seems to me that this will happen during glaciation wether someone has played a glaciation action or not (or takes a glaciation, and then skips the action).

It seems like this is how the iOS app handles it.

This doesn't really come up in my FTF games, since I don't think I've ever seen a glaciation phase skipped. In fact, there is usually a line-up of players waiting to be assholes to each other by dropping kilometre thick ice sheets on their opponent's prime real estate.

I just wanted to be sure how the mechanic worked.

There were some answers to questions posted on this forum that suggested the removal only happens if a glaciation action is played. So I was asking for a clarification.

This is incorrect, and not what the rules say.

This is correct. The removal of elements occurs very specifically during step 4 of a Glaciation action: no action, no removal.

Chad is correct but only a miracle would prevent a turn without glaciation.

Usually players lign up waiting for their opportunity

Indeed. Extremely rare to have a turn go by without a Glaciation action.
