How do you know when setting up how many of the 7 crawlers are ranged ones?

Its your choice how you want to break them down. Like most things in the game :)

This helps a lot! And you're right concerning the DIY-thing! I'm wondering for instance which lair is linked to which race. Let me guess: the choice is up to you?

Look in the back of the rulebook; there is a description of all the counters and tokens in the game.
