One of our members sometimes goes to our FLGS and picks up games without knowing anything about the game. It's a very odd practice. I had to tell him how awesome Tragedy Looper was when he bought it based on the cover art. Well last night his "I bought this random game" was Antidote". While we're waiting for everyone else to show up we figure we'll play a game just the three of us. Somehow Antidote becomes the game of the night. We end up playing game after game mostly because someone new shows up and we just figure we'll start a new round with one more person.
The game itself is interesting after two rounds the original three players have figure out how the game works. Personally I'm really hard-pressed to call it "Semi-Co-Op" and yet how else could you explain the mechanics. I've taken to ignoring the mechanics by this point and focusing on the people. I assume everyone is like me too paranoid to pass possible cures so I try reading the table or the people. My success is iffy.
Laster in the club we split into Machi Koro and Mascarade but after I COMPLETELY TROUNCE EVERYONE in Machi Koro [like a boss], we turn to Antidote 4 players with two of them new. By now I'm 100% comfortable with explaining the rules. So we begin the game and I happen to have a lot of that pepto [Pink]. I figure this game.. let's just have fun see what happens. I'll sow some mistrust. I start by dropping a high level pepto. I have some low levels to back just in case. I pass along some Mountain Dew [Green] even though I don't know if it's poison. The only thing i know is that the Veggie Smoothie [Forest Green] and the Sea Water [Cyan] are poison and I'm determined that no one will know that. I'm prepared to lie and horde and trick so people will hold on to them. To further that effort my right handed player keeps feeding me his pepto. So I drop pepto.. ONLY pepto. I've dropped 4,1,3 and I'm trying to deduce based on what everyone else is dropping and passing to me what is possible for the cure.
I manage to drop all pepto so no one knows what I know and luckily I've seen all the syringes go out. I start dropping my Xs and in the end I hang on to a #3 Mountain Dew: Code Red [Red]. We reveal our hands and we're in two camps. Mountain Dew: Code Red and Veggie Smoothie. I laugh at the Veggie Smoothie people as we dig out the actual antidote... it's Pepto. All of which were dropped by me. Everyone dies to absolutely hilarious effect.
We played a lot of games that night but the best ones were the ones where I stopped trying and just started playing around with people. I actually survived more rounds that way.
A lot of people have stated that this game isn't deep but I think with more and more plays you get to see that part of this game is the bantering, bluffing and psychological strategy that people use to influence everyone else at the table. It is great especially if you like the hidden agenda games but don't have more than 2-3 people.
