In all the games I have played so far each player chooses how they want to place their own port tiles. I was wondering if anyone has played with all players using the same port tile setup and if so how it affected the game positively or negatively.

We started accidentally with all the port tiles lined up identically to everyone else.

It was weird. Until plunder tiles that allowed additional movement came into play, the die rolls were always "beneficial" or "not" for everyone equally.

That made it so that the player rolling the dice was trying to get an advantage for his ship travel purposes, but was identically helping the ship travel for others. Of course, there would be different advantages of plunder tile activation, since those are always configured differently per player, but it wasn't our preference.

And, granted, someone could move their pirate around and that would start to make players choices deviate from the norm, but it still felt more natural to have players choose random placement of their six colored tiles instead.

We play so that each player chooses where they want to place their port tiles but they do so hidden & simultaneously so that one player cannot copy the layout of another on purpose (can still happen by luck though).

Totally agree that the tile placement should at least be done hidden from the other players or be done randomly. However, it does say in the rules that your color tile should be at the top so you can't have the same setup as everyone else.
