What a great way to celebrate V-E Day. This is going to be really cool - and there is a webcast link if you can't be there in person.

I remember my Dad (PBY turret gunner) telling me how the Navy trained him to ID the silhouette of virtually every plane that was in service then, and now the article says you can buy a helpful souvenir card at the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum to help you ID the planes in the flyover.

Hope you can watch, should inspire a lot of WWII air war gaming this weekend.

A few images of the flyover, and also of the celebration at the Smithsonian Udvar-Hazy Air & Space Museum at Dulles. The flyover was the largest collection of flying WWII aircraft I've ever seen. And the staff at Air & Space handled a large crowd very smoothly - it was a great weekend for vintage aircraft!

It was pretty impressive. To me, the star of the event was the B-29, which dwarfed everything, including the B-17s, that flew before it.

It was also cool to see the PBY Catalina.
