The wife of a friend of my son's asked me tonight, How do they paint the cubes in this game (the game being Caylus)? I couldn't answer the question so hoping someone can help me.

Thanks.

Dave.

Ooh a little higher, now a bit to the left, a little more, a little more, just a bit more. Oooh yes, that's the spot!

Presumably its an assembly line method, common to all coloured wooden bits games. I don't know anything about how to paint things by assembly line though.

I believe that the wooden game pieces you see in so many games today are spin-tumbled in a water based stain. An overcoat may be applied in the same fashion.

They are not painted but made out of different colour wood.

Only the brown ones are made from wood. Others are made from flesh, cloth, stone, or gold devil

Right. The secret is to add the dyes to the roots of the tree over a number of years. It's the same way they make coloured wool.

Lightly dip the assembly line in the paint to be used. Hold close to the target cube and then apply using short, smooth strokes of the assembly line to achieve a smooth overall coating.

The cubes are kept for years stuffed in the stomache of a lemur. You get a different color depending on when you cut them out.
