I like to look up new games, but am lazy about doing it. As such, I find it a pain to open a new window/tab, load BGG, then type a game tile (usually to misspell it then type it again). If only there were an easier way.

Well there is!

Bookmarklets are tiny bits of javascript that run when selecting a bookmark. As BGG isn't HTML friendly (for good reason), I've had to be a little inventive regarding how I post these. Fair warning, they are addictive.

To create a bookmarklet, do the following:
(1) Copy the quoted text below.
(2) Create a new bookmark.
... In Firefox, Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks > File > New
... In IE7, I have no idea b/c I don't use it.
(3) Give it a good title.
(4) Paste the copied text under location and save (click Ok).

To use the bookmarklet:
Either hightlight a game title then click the bookmarklet, or click the bookmarklet then type the game title. Basking in your own brilliance is optional.

Good luck and have fun!

** BGG, for searching your favorite board gaming site.
Quote:
javascript:q = '' + (window.getSelection ? window.getSelection() : document.getSelection ? document.getSelection() : document.selection.createRange().text); if (!q) q = prompt('Please enter a search phrase:','' ); if (q!=null) open('http://www.boardgamegeek.com/metasearch.php?' + 'searchtype=game&search=' + escape(q.replace(/ /g, '+'))); void 0

** FA/TH, for searching both Funagain.com and ThoughtHammer.com at the same time
Quote:
javascript:q = '' + (window.getSelection ? window.getSelection() : document.getSelection ? document.getSelection() : document.selection.createRange().text); if (!q) q = prompt('Please enter a search phrase:', ''); if (q!=null){ var s = escape(q.replace(/ /g, '+')); open('http://thoughthammer.com/advanced_search_result.php?keywords='+ s); open('http://www.funagain.com/control/keywordsearch?SEARCH_STRING=' + s); } void 0

Let me know of any requests/bugs. Also, I tried to do BoardGameSeeker without any luck (http://www.boardgameseeker.com/Default.aspx). Still working on it.

Chris H.

The above were adapted from Jesse Ruderman's search bookmarklet (http://www.squarefree.com/bookmarklets/).

That's very cool. However, is there a way to do it in a new tab instead of a new window?

New tabs/windows are based on your browser settings and has nothing to do with the javascript (that I know of at least )

In Firefox 2.0,
(1) Tools > Options > Tabs
(2) Select new tab in the following:
"New pages should open in a: [ ] new window, [X] new tab"

Let me know if that doesn't help.

nice little script thanks But if you are using FF why not hold down the crtl key when selecting a link? doing so will cause the the selected link to open up in a new tab.

Note that "middle" clicking will also do the same thing for those of you with that option.

Try checking out your mouse configuration software if you are not sure whether you can middle click or not.

That's weird. This bit used to mention Shire Games, and tell you all how wonderful we are. But it seems to have got deleted. Let's see what happens this time ....

Or click with the middle button (if you have one)

Yep, middle clicking or holding down shift as you click a link does that for me too.

A useful thing I have set up though .....

I use Maxthon web browser. I have set up it's search facility so that I can type "bgg GAMENAME" in the address bar and it automatically searches the Geek and loads up the results page.

It will search pretty much any site you set it up to. Eg "map LONDON" or "ebay LILAC DICE" or "bbc EAST ENDERS" or "shop MADONNA" etc etc.

true there is the middle mouse button and it works in most cases. For me if I hit he middle mouse button(depending on system) it minimizes the active window.

These are the ones I use. For 1-3, highlight the game name then click the bookmarklet (kept in my favorites bar). The others (4, 5) work off of the currently displayed page.

1. BGG search (google)
javascript:var s=(document.getSelection?document.getSelection():(s=(document.selection&&document.selection.createRange?document.selection.createRange().text:null)));if(s)top.location.href=%22http://www.google.com/search?&q=site:www.boardgamegeek.com+%22+s;

2. BGG GAME search
javascript:var s=(document.getSelection?document.getSelection():(s=(document.selection&&document.selection.createRange?document.selection.createRange().text:null)));if(s)top.location.href=%22http://www.boardgamegeek.com/quicksearch.php3?search=%22+s;

3. Alliance search
A big distributor; get retail prices for games (plus, my wife sells games so can look up prices easily here)
javascript:var s=(document.getSelection?document.getSelection():(s=(document.selection&&document.selection.createRange?document.selection.createRange().text:null)));if(s)top.location.href=%22http://www.alliance-games.com/publicaccess/Results.asp?which...;

4. TinyURL
Convert long URL to short one.
javascript:void(location.href='http://tinyurl.com/create.php?url='+location.href)

5. SnipURL
Same as above, except they allow you to create a customized names. For example: http://snipurl.com/bswprimer
javascript:var clickURL=(self.clickURL)?self.clickURL:location.href; var clickTitle=(self.clickTitle)?self.clickTitle:document.title; void(open('http://snipurl.com/q.do?link='+escape(clickURL)+'&title='+clickTitle,'click','height=393,width=393,title=no,location=no,scrollbars=yes,menubars=no,toolbars=no,resizable=yes'));

Bookmarklets (and Firefox) rock!

Re: BGG search engine, and BGG home page

Yes, but the BGG plugin is not as convenient. For me, that's usually set on wikipedia and I'd rather not change. Plus, it's easier to simply highlight a game name and click the button (vs. typing it into either BGG's search engine or the search box). Also, the bookmarklet is available on all websites, so if you want to look something up from a blog or whatever, the bookmarklet is cool.

Hi all,
See my original post above. The original bookmarklet wasn't working with ThoughtHammer's new servers so I fixed the code. Let me know of any problems. Thanks.

Does everyone know you can do one better with search keywords?

This is a great feature I use all the time- it keeps my hands on the keyboard so I don't have to move over to the mouse; very handy for researching.

Example: Right now, in Firefox, do this.

1. Ctrl-T for a new tab
2. Type "wp rome" (no quotes, hit enter)
3. There is no step three. You should be looking at the Wikipedia entry on Rome. Nifty!

You can set up a search keyword for whatever you like in a flash- just find whatever search bar you want to use (like the big one that says "games" up at the top of this page). Right click in that search field, and choose "add a Keyword for this Search."

Put whatever you like for the name- it's just a human-friendly label. Typing "BGG games search" will work fine. Under keyword, and this is important, type a short keyword to call this search. I use "bgg" with no quotes. Finally, create this under the Quick Searches folder for neatness' sake.

Now, do this:
1. Ctrl-T for a new tab
2. Type "bgg busen memo" (no quotes, hit enter)
3. There is no step three.

I use this constantly: nf for Netflix, imdb for the IMDb, eb for eBay, az for Amazon, fa for FunAgain, dw for Dell Warranty, dd for Dell drivers, a few others for boring corporate work crap. Basically, wherever you have a search box in a browser, you can make a smart keyword search to save you time.

This is tons faster for me than a bookmarklet or even a searchbox plugin; there's no mousing.

More here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/smart-keywords.html

Hope this helps!
