This is not a Review per se, but an expanded production description.
Overview: Advanced Tobruk Expansion Pack 5a adds the U.S. forces to the base Advanced Tobruk game. Included are 3 counter sheets, 2 pages of AFV cards and 12 scenarios. (In usual ATS fashion you get extra counters and possibly extra AFV cards - I am not going to delineate which are used versus not used, just what is supplied.)
Counters: 3 counter sheets are included with this expansion. These include:
?7 - General U.S. Infantry
U2 - U.S. Vehicles and Guns, including M4A1 / M4A2 / POA Shermans, Lees, M10 Tank Destroyers, and 37mm & 57mm ATGs and some halftracks.
T2 - Late 1942+ German Vehicles and British Vehicles. The British vehicles on this counter sheet are very dark. They are almost Russian color. Included German vehicles are PzIIIL's, PzIIIN's and Tigers.
AFV Cards: 2 pages including 11 different AFVs. The American cards include the Shermans, Lees and Stuarts as expected. You also get cards for the M8 HMC (SP 75mm), M3 GMC (halftrack mounting 75mm), the Priest, and the M10 tank destroyer. The Germans give you the PzIIIL and the Tiger.
Scenarios: 12 scenarios pitting the U.S. against the Germans and / or Italians are included. At least half of the scenarios are Overlay heavy.
One of the scenarios is from the action at "Sidi Bou Zid", and is very similar to a scenario from ASL. Recently on one of the ASL boards I read that the ASL version of Sidi Bou was unbalanced in favor of the Germans. I can hardly wait to try the ATS version and see if the Americans can escape disaster!!
There is an all infantry U.S. versus Italian scenario set at night.
One German / U.S. scenario features a couple of Lees and Shermans against a Tiger supported by a PzIV / PzIII and a Sd251-10 (37mm armed HT). Halfway through the game the U.S. receives 2 M-10s.
Another all AFV scenario pits 3 M3 GMC HTs and 2 M-10s against 4 PzIIIs and 2 PzIVs
