This is not a Review per se, but an expanded production description.

Overview: Advanced Tobruk Expansion Pack 5b adds the French forces to the base Advanced Tobruk game. Included are 2 counter sheets, 2 pages of AFV cards and 12 scenarios.

Counters: The game includes 2 counters sheets. Neither have an ID reference on them. The first is a standard infantry sheet sized sheet of French infantry and support weapons. These include the 37mm Infantry Gun. The second sheet is about 60% the size of the first. (It's one quarter of a normal vehicle sheet.) This sheets includes the French guns and AFVs. Included guns are the 25mm ATG, the 47mm ATG and the "French 75" (75mm artillery piece). Vehicles supplied include a truck and an armored personnel carrier. There are a couple of armored cars and an armed halftrack. AFVs provided include AMR-33 (MG armed tank), H39(L), FCM36, FT-17 (WWI vintage tanks), S35, Valentine IIIs in French colors and my favorite the R35 (with the low velocity 37mm gun.)

AFV Cards: The game includes AFV cards for all the AFVs listed above. Interesting note on the R35 and the H39(L), both have front turret armor of 6, front hull of 4 & 3 (upper and lower), and in the rear the turret armor is 5 with 5 & 4 hull armors. The lesson for today is to reverse the turret and drive these tanks around backwards!!!

Scenarios: 12 scenario cards are included. These pit the French against the U.S., and the German and Italians. A number of scenarios include the French and the U.S. against the German and / or Italians.

All but one of the scenarios are moderate to heavy on the overlays.

5 of the scenarios are specifically French versus American. One is a battle between practically all of the French AFV counters against 5 Stuarts and 2 M3 GMCs (75mm HTs), along with some supporting U.S. infantry. Also in this set is a couple of Infantry only battles.

The other scenarios are either French against Germans & Italians or U.S. and French against Germans & Italians. A couple of notable scenarios include a U.S. & French Infantry force with Stuarts and M3 GMCs against an all Italian defender. The Italians receive 1 Semovente (SP 75mm gun) which according the scenario card was actually lost at the time of the battle and joined on hearing the gunfire. There is a small scenario featuring a German attack with a Sd222 AC, Sd250 HT & a Kfz4 (staff car). These vehicles are supported by 5 squads of infantry. Against this are a couple of French 75s and a couple of elite U.S. infantry squads.

Yeah quite agree! I have only just discovered the joys of ATS (I gave up on ASL long ago as being way too complicated for occasional play), and am busy trying to score copies of the desert expansions - and your 'product descriptions' are helping a lot :-)

Was the issue of the French tanks' rear armour being stronger than the front ever addressed? I don't see anything on CSW... But it does seem very silly, and is not borne out by the armour stats (e.g. The R35 had 40mm on the turret, the blacks and the sides, and 32mm on the hull rear): ok you have to take into account armour slope etc. but reversing (albeit slowly) into battle should not be something that should even be contemplated!
Cheers
