i'm considering the following for purchase:

El Grande
Leonardo da Vinci
St. Petersberg

Games in our house will be predominantly played by 2 players (me and my budding gamer wife), and these will occasionally be pulled out for 3-5 players when friends/family are over.

Which of these work the best in the scenario (i.e. 2 player first, then 3-5? i realize Petersberg is built for 2-4, too.

Thanks!!

El Grande is possibly my favorite game, so let me assure you that it is absolutely no fun at 2 or 3.

St. Petersburg

I agree with Marc P. that El Grande is an excellent game, it's a favorite of mine, but it doesn't play well with 2.

Marc and Dustin are right. El Grande is absolutely fabulous... but not with 2 players. It's best with 5 players. I can't comment on Leonardo da Vanci. Personally, I don't enjoy St. Petersburg, but it does work with 2 players, and scales fine to 3 and 4 players too.

Tom, why do you not enjoy St. Petersberg?

Also, would anyone have a fourth, fifth, etc. recommendation in lieu of the three i listed above that would foot the bill?

Thurn and Taxis. It plays best with 2.

Also consider:

The Downfall of Pompeii
Hansa
Hey, That's My Fish!
Samurai
San Juan
Through the Desert

All are good with 2 and can accomodate more. Note though that only the last one supports 5 players.

Puerto Rico plays well with two, three or four players. A bit tough with 5 players, though.

I'd second San Juan and Samurai (although Samurai only scales to 4) and add Caylus and Power Grid.

Since you asked for other recommendations, here are some that mu wife and I haved played.

Blue Moon City
Mykerinos
Elasund: The First City
Samurai
Attika
Masons

I agree with the prior mention of Thurn and Taxis. It's a great game, that my wife loves and works great with 2.

If you are up for something lighter with a fair amount of dice luck, we have also enjoyed Rum & Pirates (but don't expect typical alea strategy)

I agree with the recomendation of San Juan and Through the desert.

Of the games you picked first St.Petersburg I think works well with any number of players, though I haven't played El grande or DaVinci.

I have to disagree with the person who recomended Pwer Grid, I think that game is downright awful for 2, or 3 for that matter.

Of the games you mentioned, St Pete is good with 2 and scales well to 3 or 4. El Grande is better with more, and I don't know Leonardo.

Of the other games mentioned, I go with San Juan for a good 2 player that also scales up to 4, but not Puerto Rico as that needs to be at least 3 to shine, and is best as a 4 player.

Of the games not yet mentioned, Carcassonne also fits the bill exactly, as well as scaling up to 5 very well.
