I lost against my boys (aged 6 and 4) I tried to play good. I got 97, the oldest 99 and the youngest 103.

Does the gameplay matter in this game or is it just a plain, but fun, waste of time?

Well, I think it matters. The key seems to be in predicting what ships certain players are likely to take and getting your pirates on the correct ones. The set collection adds quite a bit of strategy (IMO), and cannot be ignored. It's easy to gain a lot (or lose) a lot in the set collection if not paying attention. Finally, the ability to force a pirate stack to take a ship that would not be very good - also making a big difference in gameplay.

I would suspect that you never forced a ship, and the set collection came out sort of even in the end.
