Hey everyone

In the meta here where I play there are a lot of swarms, and I find I am having a lot of trouble against them. Before you tell me to get a swarm of my own out, I have to concede that I am not such a good pilot and I would prefer to fly less ships. But what possible squads can I use that would be effective against swarms and can still hold their own?

TL;DR -- Don't joust a swarm

Arc-dodgers are very effective against swarms. But you need to at least fly well enough to avoid as many return shots as possible through boosting and barrel rolls. TIE Interceptors are excellent for this (especially Soontir Fel) and with the new Phantom rules, you can actually avoid getting blocked now by decloaking ahead of time, so maybe put Intelligence Agent on something like Whisper or Echo.

Try something like this:

http://geordanr.github.io/xwing/?f=Galactic%20Empire&d=v3!s!...

I flew this once against a seven ship Rebel build and didn't lose a ship.

(this build doesn't have IA on it, but if you swap out Whisper for Echo, then you could go with IA on that instead)

Another list that is doing well against swarms are either two IG-88s, or one IG-88 and a Firespray (either Boba or Kath...I suspect Kath works better because Boba tends to want to get in close for his ability and that usually gets him killed if done too soon when the enemy still has lots of ships). Here's an example of a asymmetrical dual IG-88 list that I've seen beat a swarm:

IG-88B + Push the Limit + Heavy Laser Cannon + IG-2000 + Fire-Control System + Autothrusters; IG-88C + Adrenaline Rush + Heavy Laser Cannon + IG-2000 + Advanced Sensors + Inertial Dampeners + Autothrusters

And Seismic Charges! You can fly a "My name is Jonus" style list where you have four Tie-Bombers, one of which is Jonus who are equipped with Seismic Charges and some kind of missile (preferably Assault). Kill at least one-three Tie on the approach, then hope to be able to finish them of with the Seismic damage. These kind of bomb run lists suck in a meta full of high pilot skill aces. In a meta of swarms they can be devastating.

If there are Z-95 swarms as well you should consider Proton Bombs. It only takes 1-2 hits to kill a Z-95. Or an A-Wing, or even an E-Wing.

http://dockingbay416.com/darkhorses-strange-love-or-how-i-st... this article was my starting point for Tie-Bomber-worship. If you chose to follow this path be aware that you are not playing "the optimal way" and that some matches will be uphill struggles. You are however lucky enough to be in an enviroment where these beautiful little Bombers are actually viable. I would embrace that.

Horton Salm
-R2 Astromech
-Ion Torpedoes
-Bomb Loadout
-Blaster Turret
-Proton Bombs

Garven Dreis
-R2-D6
-Veteran Instincts
-Ion Torpedoes

Lieutenant Blount
-Deadeye
-Assault Missiles
-Engine Upgrade

I highly doubt a swarm will stay in formation against this squad. Now, against other types of squads...probably not so hot - although I like it against Decimators as well. That's 12 dice in the alpha strike, though the shot with Garven would take 2 rounds to really set up, so there might be an argument for dropping VI for Deadeye and then take Proton Torps rather than a second Ion Torps.

If you prefer flying Empire, you can field 2 Interceptors with Ruthlessness along with Echo. And if you prefer Scum, Emon Azzameen with the Andrasta title is basically a one-ship swarmkiller.

I never understood why people didn't take a Han Solo with Assault Missile. The Falcon gets a missile slot. Han Solo's re-roll ability works well to ensure that you actually hit.

...not that I'm saying anyone should fly a Fat Han. I'm sick of 'em.

There are a lot of ships that can work with Assault Missiles. Vader can TL and Focus in the same turn. That ensures you roll well. Take someone who also gives you an action, as well (gives you there action, gives you a Focus, gives you a TL, etc.).

Ion Torpedoes are also good. Even if you just get half of them, do they break formation? Lessens their power.

Don't joust. Use asteroids in your favor. Force them through it. If you can take things that are good for shooting at long range, then that's also a benefit. Mines are good, as well. If you use Emon and do the Seismic Slingshot, you could get a lot of them that way.

Ruthlessness is also great, especially if they have Howlrunner. Hit someone else and then ping her with it.

Thanks all for the valuable inputs. I am trying out two variations of the same squad, one of which I will ultimately use

How do people feel about Flight Instructor as an anti-swarm upgrade? It seems kind of nuts to get a free auto-evade for one shot no matter what on PS1 pilots, but unless you're up against a largely PS1 swarm, it seems like a high cost for what it does (a free weenie-focus).

Slaughtered a swarm with this one.

Scum faction

Kath: Andrasta, Seismic charges X3, Weapons engineer, anti-pursuit lasers, Veteran Instincts

Fett: Lone Wolf, ion cannon, anti-pursuit lasers, recon specialist, inertial dampeners.

Keep tight with obstacles such as asteroids and choose your movements wisely, especially vs a tie swarm they are going to hit you or obstacles.

Fett was really hard for anyone to hit with the re-rolls, pretty much only put focus tokens on him unless 1 on 1. In that case It was always target lock. Ions to get opponentsbehind kath or off the board.

lure people to chase kath to get in rear arc and drop charges whenever relavant. Target lock or dodge is what I pretty much used for her.
