I don't know if this is the best spot, but the evolution ads should go away.

Oooh, oooh! I get to be the one to imply that the ads are targeted based on what you browse.
Alright don't blow this opportunity, uh... stop looking up how to become a cyborg?

I know you are joking but...

Sometimes they are, sometimes they aren't... like right now I see a Nisan add, I have never looked up Nisan's nor am I interested in them. (or any other car at this time).

and yeah, the adds that are a little more risque and are not based on my browsing habits are annoying. Like the one a while back for a t-shirt company.

I feel/felt the same way. There is a box on the top part of the ad that should let you banish it. I did that and never saw it again. Now I'm seeing poop ads :)

Really? I never knew/noticed that. Going to look for it the next time I see the ad.

Yeah, I liked the ads occasionally too, but the screen space they take up was too much for the trade off.

The question about unsuitable ads appears so frequently perhaps it should be added to the FAQ.

I like most of the ads. They're even occasionally helpful. Just not the stuff that would cause my boss to yell at me and then go back to his office and look up the website.

I have to use IE once a week at work (application doesn't run in other browsers). Everytime the generic start page opens, I'm so happy about adblock technologies. Unwanted advertising is a plague in our modern world.

But then we'd have to agree on it.

We already know one camp says it's based on your browsing history, and another camp knows that it's not.

We already know one camp says you can hit the x and get rid of them, and another camp knows that either doesn't always work, or there is no x on some of the ads.

We already know that one camp says they never see those ads, so it must be something the other people are doing/not a real problem, and another camp knows that's not the case.

All I've gotten lately has been ads for skimpy summer dresses. I don't even go to men's clothing sites, let alone women's. So unless there's some tie in of gamers to gamer related shirt ads which ties to skimpy women's dresses, I'm still not buying the party line of 'it must be based on the sites you visit' or 'it never happens to me, so it must be something you're doing'.

So, without agreement, an accurate FAQ may not work.

We already know one camp says it's based on your browsing history, and another camp knows that it's not.

It's not "directly" based on browsing history. Nothing as simple as "visit clothes site, get clothing ads" (although that of course also happens, particularly with very high value products like insurance and cars). Rather, it's "combine all your known site visits and compare them with other people's site visits, to group you into a generalized profile and serve you ads based on how worthwhile a hypothetical user with that profile is to advertisers".

So if a successful conversion from an ad to sell lingerie is worth $5, and a member of your profile is deemed to have 1.5% chance of being swayed by it, while a successful conversion from an ad to sell garden hoses is only worth $1, and a member of your profile is likely to have 5% chance of being swayed by it, you're still going to get the lingerie ad.

And since "being swayed" is frequently counted as purely "visit" rather than "actually buying something", sexy ads tend to perform very well with a certain demographic. So as soon as you've been profiled to fit that demographic... (by visiting a higher percentage of the same sites as that demographic than as any other demographic), boom, sexy ads.

To sum up, saying "it's based on your browsing history" is just short-hand for saying "your browsing history from sites where you were tracked has allowed you to be profiled into a group of people for which this type of advertising has been deemed to be the most profitable".

If BGG doesn't have a definitive answer why these adverts occur, the FAQ could repeat the opinions expressed here. Would save the revolving door conversations that result from it each time where, as you say, people express contrary opinions on what causes it.

I'd also point out that the adverts may not be linked to your browsing habits but may be linked to the browsing habits of someone you share the computer with...

Don't share the computer, work or home, and do virtually no browsing, don't have time. So like I said, unless visiting BGG makes the ads think I'm in the target market for skimpy dresses, I have no answer but the one countless
people have already given..it's not related. Sort of like the one I'm getting today about Ram trucks.. no interest in trucks, no browsing of sites
even remotely related.
