My family was featured in this article. It was a fun time.

Something about that photo doesn't look right. I keep thinking that your family was photoshopped into the picture.

Good for you! Guess being beaten by kids was the worst part of his experience...a nice choice of gateway games, though. Did he like any of them more than others?

I got the exact same feeling, but I am sometimes wrong about that kind of thing.

The photo was taken with a fairly long shutter time and with flash. This means that the flash superimposed a bright snapshot on top of the long exposure. (See how David's shoulder has a ghost image?) Then someone decided to compress the heck out of the image, because otherwise it wouldn't fit the AOL dial-up intertubes - and that didn't help with the image quality either.

In other news, I just learned a new word: 'Fogy'.

Nice read, btw.

Typical newspaper stuff -- it's "Fogey" ...as in "he's an old fogey".

Otherwise, yes, it is a nice article, and thank you Holgerd for the simple explanation of the photo issue ...

We had a great time! It may seem a little odd that most of the games in the image are light-medium games and then there is Twilight Struggle. I wanted to show Bill some basic games with various mechanics but I HAD to show him TS since it is #1 here on BGG. That way he could see that beyond the first wave of introductory games there is a deep end.

You chose a good mix of introductory games. Chances are he was probably going to enjoy at least one of those. Now he's had experience of a few different kinds.

I really enjoyed this article - I love the fact that after he wrote his initial list of games he was willing to try some new ones etc and wrote what seemed like a genuine piece with some light-hearted wit.

I think the games your family chose were great, Ticket to Ride is such a classic and Forbidden Island is great too but with a totally different feel. I think you just might have converted that gentleman into a modern board gamer...

If we had more time we would have played Pandemic, that would have required more setup time and explanation than Forbidden Island. The same goes with Dixit vs Dixit Jinx, the original Dixit is a better game overall but the setup and explanation for Dixit Jinx made it better for the time we had.

The other game I was targeting to possibly play was Splendor but we ran out of time.

The rest of the games on the table were just randomly grabbed from my shelf when he asked us to put some games on the table for the picture.

Ha Ha! I think we are a few GIANT steps away from that right now. Stone Age, 7 Wonders, or Dominion might be next.

One of the best parts is that I didn't notice anything snide or condescending in the article. That kind of attitude often creeps in when a journalist is writing for a mainstream audience about a niche hobby/pastime/event--especially when the subject of the story is something often perceived as nerdy or otherwise unusual.

Glad you had fun, and I hope you converted a new gamer.

Same here

Good to see that Bill got into the spirit of things and went away to try more modern boardgames.
