Hello,

I've done a bit of looking around but am unsure about this one:

If you play Dunedain Hunters and they dig a card out of the deck with "Surge" (or, I suppose, any number of other keywords), do those keywords trigger?

The rulebook states that "Surge" only triggers during the Staging phase:

When an encounter card with the surge keyword is revealed during the staging step of the quest phase, reveal 1 additional card from the encounter deck. Resolve the surge keyword immediately after resolving
any when revealed effects on the card."

This suggest cards like the Eastern Crows wouldn't bring reinforcements with them if encountered during the Planning phase.

However, the FAQ 1.7 says:

"Surge, Doomed, and Guarded keywords should be resolved any time the card on which they occur is revealed from the encounter deck, including during setup."

... so, the FAQ wins?

-M.

Dunedain Hunter says "Forced: After Dúnedain Hunter enters play, search the top 5 cards of the encounter deck for a non-unique enemy and put it into play engaged with you." Because the bolded section does not say to reveal the enemy, you do not trigger the enemy's When Revealed text, nor its surge or doomed keywords (or any other keywords that require the enemy to have been revealed).

This is true of any effect that "adds" an enemy to the staging area as well. If the effect doesn't say "reveal", you don't do any of the things related to revealing the card.

^ What they said. Just make sure to activate any "When engages" effects (like Hummerhorns...the Hunter users' bane)

Thanks for the replies! I'd played it wronged and surged the Eastern Crows off of misreading the FAQ.

Is there an action window in there, in case something like Hummerhorns show up?

For instance, play Dunedain Hunters, pull Hummerhorns from the encounter deck, then play Straight Shot to kill it before the 5 damage kicks in?

Straight shot has the word "Action" so it doesn't apply. You'll need to find a card with a "Response", for example Dori could redirect the damage from the Hero.

That famous scene in the trilogy when Aragorn steps on a hornets nest.
