It will be compatible, if you also have the 2nd edition upgrade kit.

Wasn't the collector's edition equivalent to the second edition?

You'll want the 2nd edition rules as well.

Was this ever reprinted. I remember them talking about a second print run but then, nothing.

Even with the upgrade kit half the miniatures in your ce are incompatible. So it's like buying a downgrade kit if you ask me. If you have ce don't bother with 2nd edition anything.

It's true that the 1st edition expansion (Twilight of the Third Age) that's included in the Collector's Edition will be all but obsolete if you move to the 2nd edition. However, that expansion (and more) is being covered in the new 2nd edition expansions, which also have Collector's Edition versions (though it may be tough finding a Lords of Middle-Earth Collector's version at a reasonable price now).

It really depends on whether you're using the expansion in the 1st edition and how happy you are with it. If you're happy with it, you may want to stay on it rather than upgrade to the 2nd edition and buy up to three new expansions. Of course, if you're not using the 1st edition expansion anyway, this is a moot point.

Upgrading the CE to 2nd edition is upgrading to an improved and more balanced game.

It will also enable you to use the new 2nd edition expansions.

It's not necessary to upgrade, if you are happy with 1st edition, but I haven't regretted upgrading. I can still play 1st edition if I want, but it no longer seems very appealing.
