Reacting to some excel;lent feedback and suggestions from our horde of playtesters we have made some changes to the Activation system, as well as adding more "personality" to each of the historical pirates, a change which also makes the pirates more a pasrt of the decision-making process for the players. We also added 3 new cards . . . but the basic system we have been testing remains the same.

Te new activationb mechanic pulls BLACKBEARD somewhat ionto the realm of CDG (Card Driven Games), although not as rigidly/formulistically (sp?] as most of the games using that mechanic.

And here are the ratings each pirate now has:

•• Initiative: How “active” a pirate tended to be. This is used to determine the number of actions when the Event Card says “Actions: Pirate Initiative”.

•• Ability: The pirate’s naval and combat skills, used when at Sea, the higher the better.

•• Leadership: The pirate’s ability to control his crew – usually to quell a Mutiny - and stay the leader of that ship. The higher the better.

•• Cruelty: The pirates tendency to use dastardly, and harmful, deeds to gain information … or just for fun. See 8.43 and 9.55.

•• Cunning: The Pirate’s ability to avoid Bad Things that sometime happen. You could also call this Luck. The rating is the number of times this Pirate may use Cunning. See 12.0. Cunning is also used to play a ”Skull & crossbones” Event Card; see 17.0.

•• Duel: The Pirate’s personal combat skill, used to determine whether a ship takeover attempt by another Pirate succeeds or not; see “Piratical Ambition” Event card.

Hopefully, as we get some AAR (After Action reports) on playtesting these new mechanics we'll feed them to you . . .

All those pirates ratings sounds great. I'm curious about that Piratical Ambition rules.

Hi Richard - does this oft-repeated phrase imply that some ratings are "the lower the better?" Because it seems like they should all be made consistent one way or the other (if at all possible) so players can tell at a glance how "good" a pirate is...

And I'll throw together a six-rating card for you...

Are there also more pirates in this version of the game than the previous version?

Same number . . . but there have been some changes (3 AH/old pirates out; 3 new ones in).

Here is the "copy" for the Piratical Ambition card (of which the deck has 5):

Piratical Ambition [5]. This event is played against the active Pirate, and it may be played only by a player who has a Pirate In hand (not yet in play). The player playing this card uses his In Hand, and not yet active Pirate, to fight a Duel; see 15.0.
•• If the In Hand, Pirate wins the Duel, the Pirate who is the target of the takeover has been the subject of a mutiny led by the card-player’s Pirate (the one In Hand). The active Pirate is marooned (dead; he does retain his Notoriety but not his Net Worth), the new Pirate instantly takes over his Ship (and everything on it, but not his Notoriety), and the Crew Loyalty is placed at ‘6’.
•• If the In Hand Pirate loses the Duel this mutinous takeover has been aborted, the In Hand Pirate is killed (and never gets into the game), and the active Pirate’s Crew Loyalty is increased by one. This card may be held In Hand.
Timing: This card is played immediately (and instantly) after the active Pirate has suffered a loss of Crew Loyalty.

Blood, Portugues and Mission are out . . .Blood because we decided to leave out fictional pirates.

They've been replaced by Blackjack Bellamy, Benjamin Hornigold and someone whose name I can't recall.

Good call. Not that I mind fictional pirates in general - but it seems out of place in Blackbeard.

We've added some new mechanics to play, including a Booty Grab rule. (Any game where you can grab some booty is sure to be popualr, with at least one segment of the gaming populace). Anyway, this refers to having one pirate grab (well, steal) another's booty.

We also gave the Warships a bit more depth . . .and chance to catch pirates . . . and loosened up the Movement rules to allow more of same.

Playtest playign times are coming in at 2.5 hours for a full, 4-player game . . . that's good.

What's even better is that BLACKBEARD has "made the cut" on the GMT P500 list.

Pre-ordered!

2.5 hours for 4 players - that's perfect for my weekly gaming group.

Looks like ol' Daredevil already has the rule down...

Anyway...

I like the sound of the direction this game is taking. Good pirate games are few and far between.

So do we . . . hope to get a full, face-to-face playtest at thge upcoming BROGFest convention (Feb 1-4), with some pictures. Most of the attendees will be having dinner, one night, at the "Queen Anne's Revenge" restaurant (here in Charleston), probably the best single pirate relic "museum" in the country, and an almost complete collection of Pyle and Schoonover paintings!
