I recently played a game against Keldon's AI in which I won handidly on a dev spam strategy, but I felt like I lucked into the win.

I've posted the log below - if there's a better way to provide the game, please tell me how.

I felt like I had an incoherent strategy through the first few builds. Towards the middle of the game, I lucked into drawing Interstellar Bank and Galactic Federation and then rode the 6-dev train to victory, but I'm sure the beginning of the game has tons of opportunities for improvement. I'd appreciate any feedback of how I could have played the early turns more effectively.

Huh... this is new to me. Why not just post the plain text output on the bottom left hand window section? IIRC, you should just be able to hit Ctrl+A, or right click and select everything to copy and paste.

BTW, whenever you post code, scripts, or stuff like those where formatting exists, use the "code" tag to preserve that formatting. Not just for BGG, but other internet message boards will have this too.

Cliffs Notes: GDev is incredibly OP in 2pe RvI, winning ~95% of the time with top tier players. You got lucky. As for early game advice, here we go.

T0
You discard Epsilon Eridani, Lost Alien Warship; i discard Deserted Alien Colony, Galactic Salon.

The opening discard here hardly matters, since the only card that we want to play is Terraforming Robots.

The rest is just about keeping options open. I'd never play Salon early game even with GDev - it's too expensive for what it does. I'd play DAC 1% of the time here, even with the Alien goal. You'd have to draw precisely Deserted Alien World (-2+2) *and* our opponent would have to call 2 settles in the first 2 turns.

While i don't like EE as a play, i like playing military with GDev to shore up its only weakness (III). If we draw Last of the Gnarssh for example (or one of many other 1 defense blue/brown 3-trade worlds), EE becomes very good / good. Lost Alien Warship is worth keeping for similar reasons - good if we end up playing military, and also because of the Alien goal.

T1 Explore
We call the same phases (i discarded the same opening cards as you to play from your perspective). However, you keep Space Marines + Gambling World rather than the super-synergistic combo of Space Marines + Aquatic Uplift Race. This is a big mistake, as this is all you can ever ask for early game - an inexpensive 4 value trade good to vault you into the early-midgame. While our opponent called III/III, i'd not be thrilled about playing TRobots into Gambling World (3 cards remain). I'd rather play Space Marines + Uplift 2/2 (4 cards remain, + 4 value trade good).

Also, the Uplift goal is out there which makes the play even stronger! Whenever you feel like you lack direction, look at the goals for some guidance.

T1 Settle 1
Here you correctly place Artist Colony, but incorrectly discard Gambling World. Why are you holding onto Galactic Salon so dearly? ;) You have two 1-cost settles, play them both, and you still get to keep one card (which should be the other one you are holding onto - Space Marines.) This way you maximize the settle bonuses from Terraforming Robots, while also getting cheap cards into play.

T2
Here my default is II/II, but i'm not too keen on playing Mining Robots and ending the turn with 1 card. Despite my opponent having +1 look on explore, i think i I+1/II (plan: Space Marines) here. I really don't like to explore when opponent benefits more, but it's better than playing the currently atrocious MRobots.

T2 Develop 2
Here you have to play Mining Robots (pay with Space Marines). You played GSalon and chucked your entire hand, all for what, 1 free VPC during opponent's Trade? Now we have no hand at all and are currently doomed.

T3
I would I+1/II to get the most possible cards in hand. You I/I. It has some merit, i don't mind it (that may be results-oriented given you biased us with the ending ;).

T3 Explore
Rebel Pact + Rebel Warrior Race is extremely tempting here, to give us a chance to dig out of this awkward cardless position. While GFed is nice, if i were in this spot i wouldn't be convinced that it'll save me, since it would reduce our effective handsize from 2 to 1! I'd probably go with the stated combo, though results-bias again is hard to ignore. In future i'd suggest putting the results of the game behind a spoiler tag, while keeping your questions visible.

Heh, you kept 2 6devs in a 2 card hand. I certainly wouldn't do that. GFed + Rebel Pact or GFed + Replicant Robots would be better and more realistic.

T4
So we're in almost the same spot again, effectively no hand. We have to I+1/$ i think, squeezing out every last card we can get. Note that the "as played" advice i'm giving here and earlier is absurd, because an expert wouldn't be in this spot in the first place, and a non-expert player wouldn't have the know-how to fix the problem with this play. I.e. there's no chance that my blind play here matches your play. Time to peek. Well, i stand corrected. :)

T4 Develop
This is the point where you lucked into the win. Your opponent calls II into GDev and your GFed, and you draw IBank. All on a turn where you are gaining a bit of cardflow, trading your first good.

I'd like to note that you should have kept Galactic Advertisers + GFed, rather than Imperium Blaster Gem Consortium. You're extremely unlikely to play the latter (2 Colony Ships in the deck), while Advertisers is great, a bit late in the game but still good.

While usually true, you definitely don't want to use the code tag on that block currently. It's breaking the thread. ackmondual, could you cut out the 2 super-long lines towards the end?

Done.

Is there anything in the XML format that's not in the plain text log? I'm not seeing anything, but now that the OP brought it up, I am curious now.

Here's the copy and paste from the log. I assumed the detail in the XML file might be relevant, but maybe not.
The entire game is fully reproducible as long as the log lists discarded cards and the seed for the game. (And the program version and the game settings.)

The XML export is for somewhat more advanced usages, like getting colored log output:

1) In Advanced options, set "Export style sheet" to "rftg-bgg.xsl"
2) Optional: Customize your log in GUI Options to avoid verbose messages
3) Right click this link and "Save as.." to your export folder: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/7379896/rftg/rftg-bgg.xs...
4) Export the game to the same folder (keep the .xml extension)
5) Open the exported game in a web browser
6) Copy and paste the resulting page in your post

This feature was developed to aid the PBF series we did a while ago. Example: Team BGG_Forum (vs Wei-Hwa Huang) [RftG PBF#27, 2pa AA Orb Off]
(There is also a rftg-html.xsl file at the same location to convert the game state to HTML.)

Goal states, phase selection and phases available this round, player message (like "Choose Actions"), whether prestige action for each player is used or not. It is basically a textual reproduction of the current game state.

Thank you very much for this feedback - I appreciate the level of detail and I see the mistakes I made. There are a couple of comments that I'd like to follow up on.

I think my mistake here is symptomatic of a lot of problems I have, because I had planned on playing Terraforming Robots and wasn't able to pivot to a new combo. I also struggle with valuing early tableau spots (hence my post about builds 2-3). It makes sense now to use two builds in order to get a green good, but at the time it seemed like too expensive for a windfall (= likely one time) value.

Lots of misjudgments on my part, but the thinking was something like this: GW is really weak; opponent is not going for dev spam or military so there's likely to be a bunch of IVs; I've got Galactic Developers; Salon is one of those cards that slowly but consistently adds value, so having it out early is much better than playing it at the end of the game.

Let's say I put down both Artist Colony and Gambling World. What should I be doing on my next turn? What are my short-term goals?

Obviously I have issues with hand management, and this gets into tableau value again. I kept the two six devs because there was nothing else in hand that looked valuable and I had the good to trade my hand size up next turn (at the cost of missing whatever builds my opponent called). I didn't want to waste another tableau spot on a weak build. The same reasoning is why I didn't want to play Mining Robots for T2 dev 2 - that card adds so little to my tableau that it seems like a waste.

So, maybe the next question is: when is it worth spending down your hand to get something out in the midgame, even if it means missing some builds while you replenish your hand? And when you're not in that position, but you don't have any clearly synergistic small builds, what should you look for?

It's not just a green good - the +2 military is useful too as there is a possibility that might help you get the rebel worlds goal, and it's fairly likely you'd want to put down another military world at some point. If you're going for dev spam being able to put down military worlds to gain some more more points and reduce the number of turns in the game is a good plan.

[I've never played RvI but I think this advice holds true for most formats of RFTG]

1. If I'm about to switch to produce/consume
2. Something that will probably gain me card flow for the rest of the game (e.g. Trade League, Imperium Lords) - though I would try to get an immediate return - i.e. play Trade League when I have a good and there is a consume, or Imperium Lords on some else's produce.
3. Discounts or military - e.g. Galactic Imperium, Drop Ships, Galactic Federation - however I wouldn't want to discard my whole hand as I'd want to be holding 1-2 cards I can get down using them (1 card might be ok if I could Settle/Trade next turn, more if not)

philosophyguy wrote:

Discounts, military, card flow - ideally with cheap cards. From the base game - Expedition Force, Interstellar Bank, Investment Credits, Mining Conglomerate, Public Works, Space Marines, Spice World, New Vinland, Gem World, or Settle/Trade with a windfall. These might seem more like early game plays but they work well mid-game too. If you're playing with goals then they can help give direction too.

If GSalon were a 2 cost, the play would be fine. But because it is so expensive and generates no cards, it's not worth playing there. It's not one of the cornerstone cards mentioned in the other thread that defines the rest of your game. It doesn't suddenly give you an engine to start cranking, etc.

philosophyguy wrote:

For one thing, Gambling World shouldn't be underestimated as a source of cardflow. Every IV it generates 0.8 cards. Given the Terraforming Robots rebate, it will pay for itself and start generating profit relatively quickly. Think about this: if you pass on the 2nd settle, you are sacrificing 1 whole card (Robots bonus), at a point in the game where 1 card is extremely valuable!

On your next turn you'd have 2 cards, one of which would be Space Marines if the Artist Colony bonus draw wasn't better. I'd likely I+1/II again and build whatever best dev we have drawn in the 6 new seen cards (or SMarines).

Edit: you don't really need to have goals, you need a very "selfish", one-track outlook: make plays that generate profit.

Short-term goals are to call phases that gain you a net benefit: II and III are both good as they draw you 1 extra card relative to opponent, in addition to the phase bonus. I'd be looking to play cheap cards that generate profit - windfalls, discounts, etc. as zabdiel pointed out above.

My theoretical short-term goal in a non-engine is to get to 10 cards in hand by playing cards that generate profit. Once you do, you've reached escape velocity and leave behind the gravitational pull of early game resource scarcity. You can then do whatever you want.

This caught my eye. At that point your opponent has a military homeworld and played a military world. Why do you say he's not going for military? Because he passed on playing a military dev?

Um…good question. I have no idea where that line of thought came from. I was thinking in the context of "Will my opponent need to call $ for cardflow?" and probably oversimplified "He doesn't have enough military to just settle spam yet" into "he's not going for military." Obviously there's a huge difference between those.
