And no, I'm not soliciting insults here!

So I was posting to another thread and wanted to refer to people from the US... and so I started to typed "Americans". But I know that there are problems with that. Specifically, I've known people from Central and South America who get very upset when people in the US refer to themselves as Americans because they consider themselves Americans too.

So then I was stumped. North Americans didn't work as that'd be lumping Canadians in with us and nobody wants that! And USA'ers or United Staters are abominations that don't work. I ended up just going with the clunky "People from the US".

So what do you think? Do we need a new word to refer to people from the US? What should it be?

I'd use Americans, personally. Maybe Yankees or Yanks?

I've tried tracking down the original source, but in a radio show for the Fourth of July, Orson Welles brought this point up. He said the proper term is "United Staters" and asked other nations for a bit of indulgence in our self-centeredness when we refer to ourselves as Americans.

Sometime in the 40's. Needless to say, it didn't gain traction.

Americans. Everyone knows what you mean, even if they get pedantic and whiny about it.

Yeah... that's easy for a Canuck to say! There's already two different names that unambiguously refer to Canadians. As an American, I feel like we're falling behind in that race.

More seriously, if you're writing in a formal setting, especially on something that might be used internationally, using "Americans" might not be a valid option.

Oddly, I associate "Yanks" with a word the British (and their former colonies) use for us. I'm not sure it would be as immediately recognizable from, say, a Brazilian. But it's the best word I know.

Americans. It's an abbreviation of the country name, not some sort of land claim. It's not ambiguous, how often do you need to refer to basically the entire continental population of the Western Hemisphere? Both continents and the isthmus have specific names if you need to refer to those areas.

Now, now, you should be nice to Shadrach. He's working through his internet tough guy tackling issues, so he's going through a phase.

Don't forget about the child rape! He's still reeling from finding out the rest of the country doesn't think amateur football is more important than protecting kids from being sodomized.

USAn(s) or Usan(s), pronounced YOU-san(s).

Columbians is a very traditional answer, but risks confusion with Colombians. It's also quite out of fashion despite Columbus, OH&c., Columbia the Gem of the Ocean....
