I made a widget that allows you to post what you are playing on your blog, or just post random games from your collection.

Check it out here:

Oh man, the first game ever shown in my widget is "Beyond Balderdash." No need to expose my skeletons!

Very cool, thanks Aldie. Been playing around with how to incorporate it into my blog, it's a very neat tool

EDIT: Too bad about those Cowboys tonight (especially since I have Romo on my fantasy team) shake

For those who have never blogged before and have no experience with adding little widgets like these to their blog, I wrote a how-to for Beta Blogger:

http://bagginsunderthehill.blogspot.com/2006/12/adding-bgg-w...

And only for Beta Blogger, mostly because I think that's a good place to start blogging if you have never blogged before---and because the Beta Blogger layout editor is very cool and you don't have to hand-edit HTML, and the widget carries through different choices of themes (even ones that are structurally different).

I have used other blogging systems, and they all work similarly---simply paste the Javascript into your div or td of choice.

(Eep---I haven't updated my games played since before BGG.con!)

Hmm, I'm trying it as a border now. Probably not what you intended, but it's an experiment. Too cluttered though? (http://www.columbia.edu/~tir2101/nycgamer.html)

In the preview code, the link to game from my collection is:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/collection/ekted

Buw when I click on it, I am taken to:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/metasearch.php?searchtype=game&...

Which is not my collection at all.

Nifty idea (definitely going to give this a whirl), but it would be even nicer if the accompanying text was in the language of the blog / site. The translations for the text in dutch are:

Random: 'Willekeurige spellen uit mijn verzameling:'
Played: 'Recent gespeelde spellen uit mijn verzameling:'
Subscript: 'Verzorgd door Boardgamegeek'

with the bold parts where the links should go.

Nice.

But, are we supposed to see the widget module on other users' profile pages? It's quite intrusive now, being on the top right of every profile page.

Oh, that's nice. I'm going to do that too. I think it looks fine, just I wouldn't do it on both sides.
Shouldn't you be asleep though?

My only complaint would be that it seems that the selection of images does not pay attention to the own: tags. If it's supposedly displaying games from *my* collection, I think it ought to do that.

I love this thing!

Suggestions:

1) Can we choose to alter the game label size and placement? To the right of the game image doesnt' work for me, hence I turned off labels.

2) Can we have the "Powered by BGG" credit show up to the left, please?

3) It would be nice to have a user-defined variable (Like "Hot 10" to put in the selection filter.

4) It woruldn't work for me, but I'm sure some folks would like a horizontally oriented output.

Very nice work Aldie-- it helps pimp BGG and looks cool to boot.

Wonderful Aldie!

I'm seeing the same behavior for the 'my collection' link.

Wow, just amazing!!

One suggestion I have is to put things like the Title and "Recently Played Games from my collection" text in HTML outside of the Javascript. That way, everybody can costumize/translate those bits of text to better suit their blog/site/whatever.

EDIT: Oh, never mind... I just noticed you can opt not to have the Title and header text included. Duh!

What would be nice is to have a "preview" button right on the BGG code generating page, so that those of us who don't plan to cut and paste the code to a file with .htm extension just to find out what it looks like can see what we're missing.

Wow. Great idea, guys. I already had a blog, so this was a simple cut/paste into a new block on my page. If anyone wants to see what this looks like "in action", you can check it out here:

Thanks again Aldie!

Actually, a preview is generated when you click the generate code button; you just have scroll the code window to the right so you can see it. Took me (more than) a while to catch that!!
