We use many expansions when we play. No less than three of the big ones and 3 to 5 of the small ones as well. The size of the map by the end of the game gives whomever has the King and/or Baron tiles huge points. From 30 to 50 points. This had the effect of making those tiles the game winners. Whoever won always had one or both of those tiles.

So we scaled them back. We play that they are each worth 15 points. That feels in keeping with other expansions standards. ie. Barrel/Wheat/Cloth together are worth 30 pts so K&B together = 30 pts. It keeps the game strategies from being all about acquiring K&B and preserves the game flavor. Otherwise, it is like stinkin' Quidich were it hardly matters what efforts are being made if you don't get the magic ball.

In games with 2 or fewer expansions, we play K&B as normal.
In these games the tiles usually score in the 15-25 point range which is not game breaking.

Yep, that is ok.

In fact already exist a very similar semi-official variant out there.

It's great play with expansions, right ?

In many games we just leave them out, as it allows for making a lot of small roads, just to get some extra points in the end. But this is a good alternative, thanks for the suggestion.
