If Thorin comes out through the Front Gate the Fortification is destroyed, got it. When it is intact can you move the Dwarf Elite Unit OUT of it or other units INTO it?

A great variant to this game would be that if the SP knocks down a Fortification (Eastern Spur or Ravenhill) and then the FP re-captures it the SP would only lose 2 VP's and not 4. The reasoning for this is that the Fortification is destroyed and now it's just an ordinary Settlement.

You can move units in and out like on any regular Playfield. The only difference with the Front Gate is that the Fortification gets destroyed if Thorin leaves and it gives 4 VP even though it has no settlement/fortification image, nothing else.

Shadow gets 4 Points for capturing so he will loose them all if it gets lost. No need to overcomplicate it.

The rulebook is official. You are adding rules that just don't exist. The Front Gate acts as any other fortification. You can move armies in and out as long as you spend the dice to do so. Thorin has a special rule that effects the Front Gate. This does not change any of the other rules that effect fortifications.

As for victory points, for the Bolg player, you just add up the points for the control markers. Some are worth 2 points and some are 4 points.

As a playtester for this game I am confident that Patrick was correct in his interpretation of the rules as written.
