First, I am super excited by the new version/edition of FoD coming out from FFG.

I though we could collectively make a list of the changes between the 2 FFG editions (and also perhaps discuss their merits).

We can also bring the original game into the discussions as well.

I have only played the 2nd version.

From a cursory look:

2nd Edition:

Same:

-Miniatures sculpts
-Player counts
-Play time
-Playable characters
-Core mechanics

Differences:

-Art(box/in game art)
-Hunter movement
-Dracula movement
-Combat
-Turn structure
-Has resolve track for hunters
-Has resolve track for hunters
-Has a vampire track

3rd Edition:

Same:

-Miniatures sculpts
-Player counts
-Play time
-Playable characters
-Core mechanics

Differences:

-No dice???
-Art(box/in game art)
-Map: Sea zones (Bay of Biscay removed, Atlantic Ocean broken into 2 zones and ports redistributed), St. Joseph and St. Mary location removed, strange symbol at certain location (e.g. Budapest, Rome, Madrid)
-Hunter movement (Can save train movement)
-Combat
-Turn structure (rounds broken into day and night: hunters take actions during both/Dracula can only act at night)
-rumor tokens
-does not seem to have resolve track for hunters
-does not seem to have a vampire track
-May instead have and influence track (which might go from 0-13) - Dracula wins when he gets to 13 influence

I will keep editing this post.

Care to elaborate (I am sure I generally agree with you)?

That box cover is painful, its like Dracula started a bad metal band and this is his first album cover.

Map looks good though.

:edit:

Generally the older edition had a eerie vibe to it and this one over all feels sort of campy.

Lol.

If Dracula ever started a bad metal band it would automatically be the better than any other Metal band EVER!

Also if someone going to GenCon can try to demo this and get us more information that would be awesome!

How can we have this discussion if the new version isn't available? There's a few sentences on a web page so far.

Well some of the things can be gleaned from just comparing the maps. Some of the changes are also spelled right out in the press release. Also GenCon is next week so more details should come out then. Never too early to start this thread, imho.

Also, this is not meant to be a 2nd ed. is better/worse than 3rd ed. thread. More of a this aspect is not in 3rd edition and I am potentially glad because I did not like how that aspect was handled in 2nd ed.

The new vampire mechanics are very different. No rolling for an automatic bite. No automatic clear if encountered during the day on the card. The matured effect seems different too not clearing down to 1 card.

Wolves now has a cool matured effect but it seems like it can be weaker now because any weapon can be shown to reduce damage.

Clearly the points required to win have been changed too.

Another difference btw 2nd and 3rd: Rumor Tokens

"Rumor tokens give Dracula new ways to mislead hunters and extend the reach of his influence" (FFG)

One thing that seems the same is the play time- up to 3 hours.
That is too long for me; I wish it was streamlined to about 1.5 to 2 hours.

Something I notice, looking at the map is that whereas there was previously a division between Western and Eastern Europe (with slightly different effects dependent on where someone was), the map is now divided into a number of differently coloured are. I wonder if that has a gameplay effect or is merely decorative.

This new version may be reconfigured to allow the possibility of Expansions, if it's popular enough.

Since, you know, it's FFG.

I know that some felt that the differences between Eastern and Western Europe could have been stripped from the game. I feel that the division of the areas are now for cards which may allow a limited teleport within a region and or pinpoint the location of Dracula to within a section of the board.

It should be really interesting to see what happened with the dice. Some people really dislike the randomness of using dice but I found that the train die could really help Dracula slip past the hunters without having to spend resource and tip off the hunters.

The only problem with this is that Dracula is not allowed to use the train....

That was fine. It was the whole being delayed for a turn that really could help you slip past.

I think I really like the idea of the new turn structure. I always thought it was wonky that you would get a bunch of day turns in a row followed by a bunch of night turns.

I'm not crazy about the new cover art, that's for sure, but the map looks good, and that's where my eyes will spend most of their time.

For God's sake. No one is every happy. The art is fine, I'm not sure what you're looking at.

That's one way to put it, my immediate thought was that he looks like he'd be inciting you into a windowless van with a confectionery of some sort.

I don't know why you guys care about the box art anyway. Everything on the shelf is just a side profile of the box anyway.

Art? What Art? We play this game in the dark with candles. Who the hell is looking at the artwork instead of trying to hunt that blood sucker down??
