While I agree that as a whole dining tables and folding tables are far more comfortable over time, we often set up additional tables in a living room-like situation.

I recently decided to make a permanent table for the 'library' which has a futon in it. My plan is to take a cheap Ikea table I bought and lower it to a more comfortable height for couch-sitters!

I noticed GeekChic has a full range of options: 18" 20" 22" 24" -- I am sure that 18" is too low, especially if other players have to pull up a folding chair.

24" or maybe 22" seems ideal, but I'm really wondering if there is any consensus on the best table height for gaming on a couch or futon?

If it is very high then it isn't really a "coffee table" anymore. I bought our living room coffee table specifically with games in mind. 20 inch height. 30 inch by 48 inch size. I am happy with it. But it means bending over to play games. I would not play a long game on such a table. On the other hand, it is low enough to accommodate players sitting on the floor (I have carpets).

Thanks for the feedback, since floor sitting is unlikely in my case, we can likely go a little higher. It doesn't need to serve as a full-on coffee table, more likely it will occasionally double as a laptop table or for magic card sorting.
