has accepted my challenge to playtest Minimum Burn, my entry in the 2015 Mint Tin Design Contest.

This will be under version 0.2 of the rules, using the introductory scenario "Cruising for a Bruising".

I'll take the Agamemnon and the Courageous, giving him the Bellerophon and the Dauntless.

For notation, I'll use something like

Agamemnon 23+2E

to indicate that the Agamemnon is in square 23, with a velocity of +2. (In the physical game, this would put its previous position cube in square 21.) The ship is facing east, that is, toward the 40 end of the track.

The initial setup is:

Agamemnon 15-E
Courageous 15-E

Bellerophon 25-W
Dauntless 25-W

(The - for velocity indicates that the ship is not currently moving.)

All four ships look like this:

The Agamemnon takes the first turn. There is no drifting. It moves forward twice, leaving the map like this:

Can you edit the first post to include the ship diagrams? I could always print them off too. It looks like they are the same in the intro scenario which makes it a little easier to follow.

Having a little trouble visualizing which way the ship diagram is facing in relation to the ships on the map.

The Bellerophon is slowly turning away as the Agamenmon approaches. It looks like the Aggamenmon could fire at the Empire's ship during its next turn with the drift and another full movement. I'd like to avoid risking the chance of a miss hitting my other ship. I guess that only applies if the attacker is on the same square as well.

The Dauntless' facing disappeared in your diagram. It should still be facing W.

Imagine you have the map laid out on your table, with the 1 on the left (west) end and the 40 on the right (east) end.

An alternate way of drawing the new state would be this:

In this notation, a capital letter is a ship, the * next to it indicates its facing, and a lower-case letter is the ship's previous position cube. Is that clearer?

That is correct.

The attacker's square is irrelevant. A shot can (potentially) hit anything in the target square. If you don't want me to be able to shoot at one of your ships and have the misses spill over onto the other, don't have both of your ships in the same square.


The Courageous will just perform one forward move. That leaves the state of the map like this:

We're back to the Agamemnon, which drifts to square 19 and then performs two forward maneuvers.

Agamemnon 21+4E
Courageous 16+1E

Bellerophon 25-E
Dauntless 25-N

Both enemy ships are in range! The Agamemnon fires her four forward Gauss guns into the stern of the Bellerophon:

4d10 = (3 + 2 + 7 + 5) = 17

Okay, learning to use the BGG dice system. I need the individual rolls. What if I ask for 1d10 + 1d10 + 1d10 + 1d10?

1d10 + 1d10 + 1d10 + 1d10 = (4) + (7) + (6) + (1) = 18

Okay, there we go.

The first 1 into the Bellerophon's stern destroys its portmost Gauss gun.

The second and third 1s hit a shield.

The 10 misses completely, so I get to roll it against the Dauntless...

Correct. You are in range and firing out your port side, so you can bring 5 guns to bear. You are firing into the Agamemnon's bow.

Your 2 destroys a gun and the 4 bounces off a shield. That leaves the Agamemnon looking like this:

That brings us back to the Agamemnon. It drifts into square 25 and turns completely around:

Being in the same square with the Dauntless, I choose to be located south of her within the square. That means I can fire five guns out my starboard side into the Dauntless' stern. I can also fire my port wing gun aft at the Bellerophon.

That's your best bet, but technically you could also do it from the side. (Ships with more powerful weapons could do it from the front.)
